1 a) State what Publications which can be referred to for Procedures to be followed with regard to a
Distress being received?
b) What are the Statutory duties which must be complied with and to whom does this Law apply to
upon the receipt of a distress message.
c) In which of the following cases may a Master and vessel need not proceed to a distress and state
the reason why he is not obligated?
(i) A vessel is in the Indian Ocean and receives a distress located in the North Sea
(ii) A vessel is proceeding outward bound from Greenock with Pilot Onboard and receives a distress located off Arran
(iii) A vessel is at anchor undergoing underwater repairs in the Humber anchorage and receives a distress located off the coast of Whitby.
(iv) A vessel proceeding Westward along the English Channel passing the Channel Islands
Receives a distress located in the Solent.
(v) A vessel proceeding Westward and is one day out from leaving the Panama Canal receives a distress located 2000’ into the Pacific
2. a) As OOW what would be your actions on receipt of a Distress Message.

(iv) “S” Factor
b) Outline the factors that must be considered when determining which Search Pattern to use?
c) From the factors above describe a Search pattern that you would use to find a Survival Craft
in the Pacific.
