THE KERYGMA PREACHED BY SAINT PETER IN JERUSALEM (Acts 3:1-26)
1 Once, when Peter and John were going up to the Temple for the prayers at the ninth hour,
2 it happened that there was a man being carried along. He was a cripple from birth; and
they used to put him down every day near the Temple entrance called the Beautiful Gate
so that he could beg from the people going in. 3 When this man saw Peter and John on
their way into the Temple he begged from them. 4 Peter, and John too, looked straight at
him and said, 'Look at us.' 5 He turned to them expectantly, hoping to get something from
them, 6 but Peter said, 'I have neither silver nor gold, but I will give you what I have: in
the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!' 7 Then he took him by the right hand and
helped him to stand up. Instantly his feet and ankles became firm, 8 he jumped up, stood,
and began to walk, and he went with them into the Temple, walking and jumping and
praising God. 9 Everyone could see him walking and praising God, 10 and they
recognised him as the man who used to sit begging at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple.
They were all astonished and perplexed at what had happened to him. 11 Everyone came
running towards them in great excitement, to the Portico of Solomon, as it is called, where
the man was still clinging to Peter and John. 12 When Peter saw the people he addressed
them, 'Men of Israel, why are you so surprised at this? Why are you staring at us as though
we had made this man walk by our own power or holiness? 13 It is the God of Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, who has glorified his servant Jesus whom you
handed over and then disowned in the presence of Pilate after he had given his verdict to
release him. 14 It was you who accused the Holy and Upright One, you who demanded
that a murderer should be released to you 15 while you killed the prince of life. God,
however, raised him from the dead, and to that fact we are witnesses; 16 and it is the name
of Jesus which, through faith in him, has brought back the strength of this man whom you
see here and who is well known to you. It is faith in him that has restored this man to
health, as you can all see. 17 'Now I know, brothers, that neither you nor your leaders had
any idea what you were really doing; 18 but this was the way God carried out what he had
foretold, when he said through all his prophets that his Christ would suffer. 19 Now you
must repent and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, 20 and so that the Lord
may send the time of comfort. Then he will send you the Christ he has predestined, that is
Jesus, 21 whom heaven must keep till the universal restoration comes which God
proclaimed, speaking through his holy prophets. 22 Moses, for example, said, "From
among your brothers the Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me; you will listen
to whatever he tells you. 23 Anyone who refuses to listen to that prophet shall be cut off

from the people." 24 In fact, all the prophets that have ever spoken, from Samuel onwards,
have predicted these days. 25 'You are the heirs of the prophets, the heirs of the covenant
God made with your ancestors when he told Abraham, "All the nations of the earth will be
blessed in your descendants". 26 It was for you in the first place that God raised up his
servant and sent him to bless you as every one of you turns from his wicked ways.'
THE KERYGMA PREACHED BY SAINT PAUL IN ANTIOCH (Acts 13:13-42)
13 Paul and his companions [È] 14 reached Antioch in Pisidia. Here they went to
synagogue on the Sabbath and took their seats. 15 After the passages from the Law and
the Prophets had been read, the presidents of the synagogue sent them a message,
'Brothers, if you would like to address some words of encouragement to the congregation,
please do so.' 16 Paul stood up, raised his hand for silence and began to speak: 'Men of
Israel, and fearers of God, listen! [È] 23 To keep his promise, God has raised up for Israel
one of David's descendants, Jesus, as Saviour, 24 whose coming was heralded by John
when he proclaimed a baptism of repentance for the whole people of Israel. 25 Before
John ended his course he said, "I am not the one you imagine me to be; there is someone
coming after me whose sandal I am not fit to undo." 26 'My brothers, sons of Abraham's
race, and all you god fearers, this message of salvation is meant for you. 27 What the
people of Jerusalem and their rulers did, though they did not realise it, was in fact to fulfil
the prophecies read on every Sabbath. 28 Though they found nothing to justify his
execution, they condemned him and asked Pilate to have him put to death. 29 When they
had carried out everything that scripture foretells about him they took him down from the
tree and buried him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days
he appeared to those who had accompanied him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and it is these
same companions of his who are now his witnesses before our people. 32 'We have come
here to tell you the good news that the promise made to our ancestors has come about. 33
God has fulfilled it to their children by raising Jesus from the dead. [È] 38 'My brothers, I
want you to realise that it is through him that forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to
you. Through him justification from all sins from which the Law of Moses was unable to
justify 39 is being offered to every believer.' [È] 42 As they left they were urged to
continue this preaching the following Sabbath.

AN EXTRACT FROM THE KERYGMA PREACHED BY KIKO 1
Saint Paul said that God wanted that the salvation of the world should come by means of
the stupidity of the preaching. The Gospel is fundamentally a news in front of which one
can not remain indifferent, one needs to make a choice. If I announce this news here
today -even if you are Bishops - it obliges all of us take a decision. This decision, helped
by the grace of the Holy Spirit, is what we call conversion. I say to you "convert
yourselves". The Gospel itself says it: "Convert and believe in the Good News". And what
is this news which obliges he who listens to take a decision, to believe it or to not believe
it? The Letter to the Hebrews says that "since the children share flesh and blood, he
himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the lord
of death, that is, the devil, and so free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the
fear of death ".
Here we are presented with an impressive biblical anthropology. This, in fact, is the
content of that what we preach, and which leaves a great impression on the people who
listen. We ask: "Why do you suffer, what's happening to you?". The people listen to us.
Why do they continue to come to the catechesis? Because the word we have given them
is prophetic, it is actualised. And since it is fulfilled in them, in their life, they continue to
come. Christianity, in fact, is an event, a fact. It is a grace, it is not a conference.
Christ is risen from the dead, he has conquered death: And what use is this, concretely,
for me, Kiko Arguello,...? To understand this, it is necessary to understand why I am
afraid of death, why does sin dwell in me. And what is sin? It is an experience that I have
made, or Î if you want Î something that I have inherited. That which we call original sin. It
is something terrible to think how, after the Council, a certain type of theology has
sometimes sought to explain things in a new way, without having recourse to the doctrine
of original sin, till the point of arriving to a destructive humanism. Original sin, in fact, is
something extremely important. You, I, we, are Adam and Eve. When the ser-pent, the
devil, says to Eve, whilst she looks at the tree of knowledge of good and evil: "How come
you can not eat from any tree in the gar-den?" Eve answers: "Yes, we may eat of the fruit
of the trees in the garden. Only one is forbid-den". But already the devil has insinuated in
her sub-conscience the idea that if one thing is forbidden, it is as if everything were
forbidden. He has already prepared the ground. After he says to her, "No.1 You will not
die. For God knows very well that the moment you eat from that tree, you will become like
God, knowing what is good and evil. You will be able to decide for yourself. You will be
