WIRE-WRAPPING A CHAIN

A secure way to attach a clasp to a chain is wire-wrapping a bead unit between the two.
Better than a jump ring and more attractive than a split ring, the wire-wrap looks finished and
is extremely safe.
The same technique is used to attach chain to chain with a bead unit between the two. Again,
it’s much safer than doing just a rosary loop which will eventually work its way open. So,
whether you are attaching chain to clasp or chain to chain, the technique is the same.
Ingredients for Wire-Wrapping a Chain
TOOLS NEEDED

A. Bent-nose chain pliers
B. Needle-nose chain pliers

1 13mm Sterling silver lobster clasp
3' Perwire-wrap.Sterling silver wire, 20-26 gauge
depending on the bead hole size.

Wire-wrapping a chain

Step 1
Holding the needle-
nose chain pliers grab
the wire about one inch
from the end.
Step 2
a) Usingyourfinger,
bend the short end
of the wire at a
right angle.
Step 3
a) Switchtothe
round-nose pliers
b) Place the tips of
the round-nose
pliers above and
below the right-
angled short wire.
Step 4
Use your finger to push
the short end of the
wire over the top
plier leg.
Step 5
Rotate your pliers a
quarter turn.
Step 6
Continue to bend the
wire all the way around
to form a complete
circle. This is the wire-
wrapped loop.
Step 7
Center the loop on top
of the long wire.
Step 8
To open the loop, lift
it out of its plane. Do
not pull the loop open
sideways or you will
distort its round shape.
Step 9
Slide the chain into
the loop.
Step 10
Use the needle-nose
chain pliers to close
the loop.
Step 11
Switch to the round-
nose pliers.
Step 12
Starting at the base
of the loop, begin
wrapping the short
wire around the
long wire.
Step 13
Complete up to three
full turns of the wire.

Using the wire cutters,
clip off excess wire.
Step 15
Using the bent-nose
chain pliers, press in
the end of the wire so it
is smooth to the touch.
Step 16
Slide your bead onto
the wire.
Step 17
Using the tips of your
needle-nose pliers,
grab the wire up
against the bead.
Step 18
a) Using your finger,
bend the wire at a
right angle.
b) Repeat steps 3-8
to make your loop.

Step 19
You may:
a) Slidetheclaspor
b) a new section of
chain into the loop.
Step 20
Repeat steps 10-15
to wire-wrap your
loop closed.
