Toconstructthetable,firstjointtheedgesofthethree(orfewerifyouhavewiderboardsfor
thetop)toppieces( A )andgluethemtogether.Tomakeplaningthetopeasier,chooseboards
whosepatternsmatchwiththegrainorientedinthesamedirection.Oncethegluedries,cuta
groove1/4”wideand3/4”deepintothetwolongsidesofthetop.
Next,sizethebreadboardends( B )andcutthetonguetomatchthegrooveinthetop.The
tongueshouldslipintothegroovebyhand,buthaveaniceeven,tightfit.
Toattachthebreadboardendstothetabletop,clampthethreepiecestogetheranddrillsix
holesthroughthemiddleofthetopsuchthattheygothroughthemiddleoftheedgegrooves
andthetongue(shownassmallcirclesontheTopView).Yourholesshouldbethesamesizeas
whateverdowelorsquarepegyouplantousetoholdtheendsonthetable.Removethetop
fromtheclampsandelongatethefourouterholesinthetonguesothatthemiddleboardscan
expandandcontractwhilekeepingthebreadboardendsattached(Seetheenlargedsectionin
thefigureabove).Iusedaholesawtoextendthedrillholes,butajigsaworaroundfilewould
alsowork.Themiddleholesineachtongueshouldbeleftalone.
Putadabofglueinthemiddleofeachtongueandintheinsidesofthedowelholesontheglued-
upmiddlesection.Usegluesparingly,aswewantthemiddlesectionofthetoptoexpandand
contractwithchangesinhumidity.Slipthepiecestogetherandputthembackintheclamps.
Finally,drivethedowelsintotheholesandletthegluedry.
Whilethegluedries,cutthestretchers( C )andlegs( D )tosize.Besuretomarkwhichfacesget
tapersoneachlegbeforecuttingthemsoyou’llhaveaninsidetaperonallfourlegs.Alsocut
thegroovesinthetopofeachstretcher.Thegroovesareabout1/4”wide,1/4”to1/2”deep
andbeginabout1/2”downfromthetopedgeofeachstretcher.
Planeandsmoothallthepiecesandthetop(oncethegluedries).Ialsoroundedtheedgesof
thetabletopusingaround-overbitinmyrouter,butyoucouldusesandpaperorahandplane
toacheivethesameeect.
TojointhestretchersandthelegsIuseddowelpins,butyoucoulduseamortiseandtenon
jointifyoulike.Thetablewon’tcarrymuchweight,sodowelsaresucient.
Finally,cutsomeclips( E )sothattheirtonguewillfitintothegroovesinthestretcherswhen
theclipisfastenedtothetabletopfromunderneath.Afterallthegluehasdried,connectthe
topusingtheclips.Besuretoplanforthemovementofthetopwhenattachingtheclips.
