After WWII Poland and Katowice found themselves part of
the bloc of states subject to the rule of Moscow and Jozef
Stalin. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Soviets decided
to bestow a ‘gift’ on Katowice and renamed the city in
honour of their great leader. This proved to be just another
(small) chapter in the story of this remarkable city on a
journey that the locals hope will end in it being awarded
European Capital of Culture status for 2016. Read about

One of the major contributors to the bad press Katowice
has received over the years from the foreign press has to
do with the first impression many journos and visitors have
no doubt received on arriving at Katowice’s main railway
station. Well after years of discussion and debate, a new
era has dawned with the commencement of a complete
redevelopment of the train station and surrounding area.

You may have noticed - while hunting around the
internet or flicking through your in-flight magazine
- that it appears to be common practice to hand
over information about Krakow when you’ve actually
asked about Katowice. There seems to be a school
of thought amongst people in the ‘travel game’ that
while you clearly searched ‘Katowice’ you surely
couldn’t have meant it, and even if you did you
clearly weren’t aware that these travel experts have
decided it is a dump. That’s why ‘Getting to town’
information for Katowice airport usually means
telling you how to get to Krakow’s Rynek as quickly
as possible.
Well, these experts are missing out. But now that
you have found Katowice In Your Pocket, you will
no longer need to. While we are amongst the first
people to admit that there are some parts of the
Katowice conurbation that quite frankly deserve
a slap for downright ugliness or dereliction, we
will at the same time share with you some of the
fascinating, even beautiful secrets we’ve unearthed
while researching this guide. Quite frankly, Katowice
is a truly remarkable example of centrally-planned
living.
From the 19th century - when the district of
Giszowiec became one of the first planned ‘Garden
Towns’ in the world - to the mid-20th century (when
it became one of the major cogs in the Soviet
bloc’s industrial machine), Katowice has been at
the urban avant garde. It might not all be spires,
cobbled streets, buskers and cafes, but it’s definitely
different. And it deserves discovering.
