CD image that will autorun to give
you a working Linux system with-
out touching your hard disk.
Morphix is a modular distribu-
tion, (you put it in your DVD-Rom
drive, you boot and it works… no
hard disk-installation necessary, does-
n’t touch your data). Also, installing
Morphix on a harddisk is a breeze, if you
want to. Just click on the icon on the
desktop, or choose the installer from the
morphix/babytux submenu.
Team sizes are ideally between 10 and
15 on each side, and the network code
will allow anyone with any bandwidth to
play relatively smoothly. Game type
offerings range from the classic Capture
the Flag to a new type, affectionately
called “Knockout”.
Plenty of maps are provided, but the
beauty of this game is its customization
possibilities. Mission creation has never
been easier. Skins, models, and effects
can all be modified by the end-user with
commonly available tools.
Missing files
Last month’s DVD accidentally missed
the Gnome files. We have added all the
missing files onto this DVD and updated
them where a later version was avail-
able. You can find these files in the
/missing directory
games for you to try. Actually we
found mirrors of games hard if not
impossible to find so we thought we had
better do the job properly and collate
them. We have over 500 games for you
to run under Linux.
Many of the games you may be famil-
iar with, such as Tetris and the stunning
flight simulator – FlightGear. Some
games you may never have heard of,
such as Wakkabox or Quack. The games
cover many categories ranging from
arcade games to puzzles that require
more thought than joystick manipulation.
With over 500 games it is hard to
explain the broad range of this collec-
tion. In the following boxes we tell you
about some of our personal favourites.
This is only a tiny indication of what is
collated, and so we encourage you to try
the rest when you have free moments.
Racer (3D car racing)
Although TORCS is popular at the
moment, we have a lot of affection for
Racer by Ruud van Gaal. Maybe this is
down to just how smooth the driving
is in this amazing graphical car racing
simulator, or the fact that we can make
our own cars with different physical
properties. Just about everything is cus-
tomizable, which appeals to our sense of
exploration.
Legends (RPG)
As you can see from our letters page, this
is a recent addition to the games we play
in the office. Productivity is down and
we blame it all on Zach. This is a fast-
paced first-person-perspective online
multiplayer game. The game is designed
to take advantage of the beautiful envi-
ronments available from the Torque
engine it is based on, while still offering
the breakneck pacing and variety of
styles available from such classics as
Quake and Tribes.
Game-play is not the strafe-strafe-
jump-strafe-shoot-strafe-run-like-hell
style a lot of games espouse; the addition
of a jetpack adds a third dimension of
mobility that makes skill, forethought,
and restraint necessities to winning.
Freeciv (Strategy)
This is a game where you play the part of
a politician and ruler for a new country.
In Freeciv, the strategy game, you can
head the transition of a civilization from
a nomadic tribe to a world power.
Freeciv, the free version of the classic
strategy game, Civilization, which has
fascinated whole generations of world
conquerors and founding fathers, can
provide hours of gaming fun.
The idea of the game is easily
explained. The goal of Freeciv is no
less than achieving world domination –

On the DVD you will find the latest copy
of the Morphix Live Games CD. This is a

either by military or technological
advances. Each player starts off with
two settlers and a guide in the year 4000
BC. The idea is to found a settlement
with this society, to build up an infra-
structure, introduce trade and research
and to keep your nose in front of the
other players.

Atomix (Puzzle)
Atomix is known to many and is a won-
derful little logic puzzle game where you
have to build molecules out of single
atoms. These are scattered around
between the walls and obstacles on the
playing field.
Once you have pushed an atom in one
direction it moves until it hits an obsta-
cle or another atom. It takes some
thought to work out how to construct
complex molecules with this atomic
behaviour. The game is inspired by the
original Amiga version. It uses the
Gnome libraries and is distributed under
the terms of the General Public License
(GPL).
KWappen (Board game)
Kwappen is a seductively simple game
that devours too much of our time. The
goal is the reduction of the 4 columns in
the shortest possible time. The rules of
the game are very simple. You can move
symbols (stones) on top of a column or
rotate columns.
Columns shrink when 2 or more equal
stones are superimposed or if you have
4 equal card symbols in a row. The
computer stacks its own symbols in the
top right corner. The computer symbol is
put on the top of a column after your
move. The computer selects a random
column .
You win, if all your columns have only
1 stone or are empty. You lose, if one col-
umn grows to contain 10 or more stones
after shrinking.
ClanBomber
ClanBomber is a free (GPL) Bomberman-
like multiplayer game that uses ClanLib,
a free multi platform C++ game
Software Development Kit. Originally,
“ClanBomber” was a working title for a
small game started in September 1998,
no more than an exercise in learning
how to use ClanLib.
But the ClanBomber project has grown
into a real game. It is fully playable and
features Computer controlled bombers,
however, it is recommended to play
ClanBomber with friends (3-8 players are
really fun). Fantastic arcade fun.
There is no need to worry about the
Clanlib code. The collection includes
