STIRLING TECHNOLOGY
The Stirling process is a sealed refrigerant
gas process. The inert gas helium is used
as process gas, which is neither toxic nor
flammable.
It also has no ozone depleting potential
and subsequently makes no contribution
to global warming. Contrary to
conventional cold steam refrigerators,
Stirling machines involve no
phase changes. As a result, the
refrigeration temperature, as well as the
heat transfer temperature, are both in-
dependent of pressure levels and can
therefore be freely selected.
As shown by the diagram, Stirling
refrigerators offer better efficiencies than
single and two-stage cold steam
refrigerators at refrigeration temperatures
below - 50
°
C.
STIRLING REFRIGERATOR
Solo developed a Stirling motor, which is
manufactured in volume and is utilised for the
production of power and heat. In conjunction
with the Institute for Applied Thermodynamics
and Air-conditioning at the University of Essen,
this motor was converted into a refrigerator,
providing refrigeration at temperatures down to
–200
°
C. These temperatures are applied in
low-temperature technology, for example in the
re-condensation of solvents in industry as well
as for liquefying methane in the medical sector,
the food processing industry or in
superconduction. By varying the speed or the
process gas pressure, the output can be
controlled in a broad range, whilst still
achieving excellent efficiencies at part loads.
