T here are many people who helped make this book possible.
First, I would like to acknowledge the significant contributions by Allison Eckelkamp,
a Syracuse University student who graduated with distinctive honors this spring. In
the midst of a demanding schedule, Allison compiled much of the research on giving
trends, research sources, and proposal components. Her contributions to The New
Philanthropy, Finding the Right Funders, and Writing the Proposal parts were invalu-
able. Allison’s enthusiasm for the project, quick mind, and natural curiosity helped
me to stay on track.
I would also like to thank Niki Phillips, my assistant, for her support throughout the
writing of this book. Her help in research, obtaining permission for and preparing
samples, proofing, editing, and layout was no small feat, and she handled it all with
