The heritage of the town of Auxerre
With its historical heritage, Auxerre awared the title of
“City of art” in 1995
Saint-Germain Abbey
This abbey is an almost intact monastic
complex founded on the 5th century.
You can see the abbey church from the
13 th and 14 th centuries and its crypts
from the 9 th century, the cloister with
its architecture of the 17 th century and
the cellar where you discover several
exhibitions during the year. The City
History museum has been set up in the
old dorters (from the 17 th century).
You cannot finish your visit without
visiting the for-nave of the abbey,
which has been the site of an important
archaeological dig.

The stained glass windows in the choir
and transept endow the inside with a
particular tonality and are some of the
most beautifully preserved in France.
Finally, you cannot leave the cathedral
without visiting the crypts with the
famous unusual mural of Christ on
horseback and the treasure where
you have jewels, paintings like
La déposition de croix of Luca Penni.

Archaeological Museum
The restored monastic buildings house
the town of Auxerre’s collections, while
the 17 th century dormitories accommo-
date the prehistoric and gallo-roman
archaeological collections and four new
rooms around the cloister present the
medieval collections.

mi-march : from monday to saturday
from 7:30 to 5:00 pm and sundays
from 8:30 to 5:00 pm.

Saint-Etienne Cathedral
The cathedral is a real model of elegance
and gothic style, situated in the centre,
dating from the 13 th century. One of its
particularities is the only tour of the
monument. The cathedral is adorned
with remarkable bas relief on its doorway.

Two others churches are built in the
historical centre of the city :
Saint-Eusèbe church , located in
the heart of the city-centre and
Saint-Pierre church , not far from the
river Yonne, the quarter of wine
growers until the beginning of the
19 th century, when the land surrounding
Auxerre was completely covered with
wines.
You can also visit :
The Leblanc-Duvernoy Museum, in an
intimate setting of an 18 th century
private mansion, contains 18 th century
tapestries, large and French collections
of porcelain, Puisaye earthenware.

The Visitandines Chapel houses a
significant collection of multicoloured
wood sculptures, made by a local artist,
François Brochet, like the statue of
Cadet Roussel in the city centre. Open

The Natural History Museum presents
permanent collections with minerals
and fossils, naturalised animals and
many temporary exhibitions.
Visits : everyday (except saturdays and
bank holidays) from 1.30 to 5.30 pm.

The Water and Environment Centre ,
in a former pumping house is located
along the Canal du Nivernais and
presents many temporary exhibitions
all the year.
The symbol of the city is the famous
Tour de l’Horloge dating from the
15 th century, located in the middle
of pedestrian centre wich gives a
bourgeois and rich appearance to the
city. A lot of half-timbered houses give
colours to one of the typical and
frequented quarter.
Visits : everyday from 2.00 to 5.30 pm in
april, may and october. From 2.00 to 6.00
pm in june, july, august and september.
