Using Selection Tools - Plus and Minus Brushes

How do I use the Plus Brush and the Minus Brush.
Response
Once image enhancements have been specified, the Plus Brush can be used to apply
those enhancements to specific portions of the image. Similarly, the Minus Brush can be
used to remove those enhancements from specific portions of the image.
Before
The brightness of the sky portion is perfect,
but the building and lawn are too dark.
After
The building and lawn portions of the image are
brightened without affecting the sky portion.

STEP 1: Open an image
This portion covers brightening of specific portions of an image using the Plus Brush.
First, open an image and consider how the image should be enhanced.
The sky portion of this image exhibits optimum brightness, so it doesn’t need to be
enhanced.
The building and lawn portions, however, need to be brightened.
STEP 2: First, brighten the entire image
Select
LCH…
from the
Color
submenu in the
Adjust
menu.
Raise the
Master
Lightness
curve in the LCH… dialog to increase brightness to the
optimum level for the building and lawn portions of the image. Brightness of the sky
portion will also be increased, but we will focus only on the building and lawn portions
here.
The entire image is brightened.
Once adjustment is complete, click
OK
.
STEP 3: Select the Plus Brush
Select the Plus Brush.
The enhancement applied in step 2 is temporarily removed.
STEP 4: Use the Plus Brush to brighten portions of the image
Drag the mouse over the building and lawn portions that require brightening. The image
below shows the effect when the mouse is dragged over a portion of the building and lawn.
When the Plus Brush or Minus Brush is selected, right-clicking the mouse over the image (or clicking
while holding down the CTRL key in Windows/CONTROL key on a Macintosh) displays the Selection
Brush Options dialog. The size of the brush can be modified using the
Size
setting.
