i albo zwerbalizowanego, albo takiego, który da się zwerbalizować. Konieczny jest kod w pełni lub przynajmniej w części wspólny dla nadawcy i odbiorcy.
Musi też istnieć kontakt – fizyczny kanał i psychiczny wiązek między nadawcą

·         funkcja emotywna (ekspresywna) – ześrodkowana na odbiorcy, wskazuje na bezpośrednie wyrażenie postawy mówiącego, czyli nadawcy, wobec tego, o czym on mówi

o       wywarcie wrażenia pewnej emocji (prawdziwej lub udanej)

o       czysty element emotywny w języku à wykrzykniki

·         funkcja konatywna (impresywna) – prezentuje najczystszą ekspresję gramatyczną w formie wołacza i rozkaźnika, orientacja na odbiorcę

·         funkcja fatyczna – nastawienie na kontakt

·         funkcja metajęzykowa – mowa sprowadzona do kodu

·         funkcja poetycka – nastawienie na sam komunikat, skupienie się na komunikacie dla niego samego

Poetyka – w szeregowym znaczeniu tego słowa – zajmuje się funkcją poetycką nie tylko w poezji, gdzie jest ona nadrzędna w stosunku do innych funkcji językowych, lecz także poza poezją, gdzie jakaś inna funkcja jest nadrzędna w stosunku

„Figura dźwiękowa” – w której Hopkins upatrywał konstytutywny czynnik wiersza:

·         każda sylaba zawiera fonem zgłoskotwórczy, a przerwa między dwoma następującymi po sobie fonemami zgłoskotwórczymi zostaje spełniona przez marginalne, niezgłoskotwórcze fonemy

·         w tzw. wersyfikacji sylabicznej liczba fonemów zgłoskotwórczych
w ograniczonym metrycznie szeregu (sekwencji czasowej) jest zwykle konstantną

·         w każdym wierszu akcentowym kontrast między wyższą i niższą wydatnością zostaje osiągnięty przez przeciwstawienie sylab pod przyciskiem sylabom

·         większość systemów akcentowanych operuje głównie kontrastem sylab
z akcentem wyrazowym i sylab bez akcentu wyrazowego

·         wiersz „tonematyczny” – oparty na następstwie różnorodnych intonacji zgłosek

·         inna odmiana wersyfikacji – wiersz zagadek

·         wiersz miarowy może być zbudowany tylko na gruncie przeciwstawienia zgłoskowych wierzchołków i spadków (sylabizm), względnych poz. wierzchołków (tonizm) albo względnego trwania szczytów zgłoskowych
lub całych zgłosek (iloczas)

·         tzw. przesunięcia przycisków wyrazowych w słowach wielozgłoskowych
