You will also need four 5/8” buttons, one 1” buckle (without prong)
Good fabrics to use gabardine, brocade,satin and jacquards
For the lining cotton or polyester is good.
INTERFACING
Trim corners from interfacing at neck line and bottom point. Fuse interfacing to the
wrong side of each side of matching fabric section.
FRONT & BACK Stitch centre seam of the two back sections from upper edge to
circle. (Remaining
back pieces will be used as lining). Cut back belt into two pieces along cut off line
indicated on pattern forming right and
left back belt. For right belt, fold shorter belt in half lengthwise, right sides together,
trim seam
allowances, turn right side out, then press. Slip one short end of right belt through
buckle. Turn under 1-1 ½ “ (3.8cm) on raw
edge. Turn under again ¼” (6mm) and hand sew in place. With right sides together, pin
right belt to right side of back between squares, having
raw edge extending 5/8” (1.5cm) from raw edge. Cut seam allowances to ¼” (6mm) from
stitching, being careful not to cut back. Turn belt toward centre back, covering raw edges.
Edge stitch along seam For left belt, fold longer belt in half lengthwise, right sides
together, stitch, leaving one
short end free, trim seam allowances. Turn right side out and press. With right sides
together, pin left belt to left side of back between squares, having raw
edge extending 5/8” (1.5cm) beyond solid line toward centre back and seam
downward. Stitch 5/8” (1.5cm) from raw edge.
Cut seam allowances to ¼” (6mm) from stitching, being careful not to cut back. Turn
belt toward centre back, covering raw edges. Edge stitch, along seam. Stitch the back to
the fronts at shoulders
LINING
Stitch centre seam of back lining, from upper edge to circle Stitch front lining to back
lining at shoulders. Pin lining to vest, right sides together matching notches, circles,
centres and shoulder
seams. Stitch lower, front and neck edges, breaking stitching at circles. Stitch armhole
edges.
Turn right side out, bringing both fronts through one shoulder and out through one side
of back and press.
Starting 2” (5cm) above armhole seam and ending 2” (5cm) below seam at lower edge,
stitch back to front at sides and lining edges together in one continuous seam.
Finger press seam allowances open. Slip seam allowances under lining. Turn under 5/8”
(1.5cm) on side opening edges of lining and slipstitch together.
BUTTONHOLES AND BUTTONS Make buttonholes in left front at markings. Lap
left front over right, matching centres. Mark and sew buttons under buttonholes. And
there you have it one mans waistcoat/vest
