prehending;Transmuting;RealizingtheDream-statetobeMaya;andme-
ditatingontheThatnessofthedream-state.

Thefirstpart,Comprehending[thenatureoftheDream-state]compriseth
threepractices:ComprehendingitbythePowerofResolution,Comprehen-
dingitbythePowerofBreath,andComprehendingitbythePowerof
Visualization.
1.1Practice1-ComprehendingItByThePowerOf
Resolution
Withrespecttothefirst,ComprehendingitbythePowerofResolution,that
whichhasbeencalled’theinitialcomprehendingofthedream’,referrethto
resolvingtomaintainunbrokencontinuityofconsciousness[throughoutboth
thewaking-stateandthedream-state].
Inotherwords,underallconditionsduringtheday[orwaking-state]hold
totheconceptthatallthingsareofthesubstanceofdreamsandthatthou
mustrealizetheirtruenature.
Then,atnight,whenabouttosleep,praytotheGuruthatthoumayestbe
enabledtocomprehendthedream-state;andfirmlyresolvethatthouwilt
comprehendit.Bymeditatingthusly,oneiscertaintocomprehendit.
Ithathfurtherbeensaid[inthisconnection]:’Allthingsaretheresultof
causes;theydependwhollyuponresolutions[ormotives]’

Breath
Inthesecondpractice,ComprehendingitbythePowerofBreath,theme-
thodsare:Sleepontherightside,asaliondoth.Withthethumbandthe
ring-fingeroftherighthandpressthepulsationofthethroatarteries;stop
thenostrilswiththefingers[ofthelefthand];andletthesalivacollectin
thethroat.Asaresultofthesemethods,theyoginenjoysasvividconscious-
nessinthedream-stateasinthewaking-state;andinpassingfromonestate
toanotherexperiencesnobreakinthecontinuityofmemory.Therebythe
contentofthedream-stateisfoundtobequitethesameasthecontentof
thewaking-state,inthatitiswhollyphenomenalandthereforeillusory...

Visualization
Thethirdpractice,ComprehendingitbythePowerofVisualization,consis-
tethoftheseprocesses:Thevisualizationitself;derivingtheGreatestBenefit
fromtheVisualization;AndpreventingtheSpreading-outoftheDream-
Content(thislastprocessreferstoovercomingthetendencyofdreamsto
losetheircoherence,ortobelosttomemoryuponwaking.).
1.3.1TheVisualizationItself
Inthefirst,theVisualizationItself,themethodisasfolloweth:
ThinkingthatthouartthyselfthedeityVajra-Yogini,visualizeinthe
throatpsychic-centerthesyllableAH,redofcolourandvividlyradiant,as
beingtherealembodimentofDivineSpeech.(Midwaybetweentheheart
psychic-centerandthatofthethroat,inaspaceaboutfourincheslong,a
tube-likepsychic-organissaidtoexist.Ifthevitalforcebequiescentwithin
it,sleepensues;andifthevital-forcebeinmotionwithinit,dreamsoccur.
Hencethevisualizationchieflyconcernsthethroatpsychic-center.)
BymentallyconcentratingontheradianceoftheAH,andrecognizing
everyphenomenalthingtobeinessencelikeformsreflectedinamirror,
which,thoughapparent,havenorealexistenceofthemselves,onecompre-
hendeththedream.
1.3.2DerivingTheGreatestBenefitFromTheVisualization
Inthesecond,forDerivingtheGreatestBenefitfromtheVisualization,the
methodisasfolloweth:
Atnightfall,[striveto]comprehendthenatureofthedream-stateby
meansofthevisualizationjustdescribedabove.Atdawnpracticethepot-
shapedbreathingseventimes.Resolve[ortry]eleventimestocomprehend
thenatureofthedream-state.Thenconcentratetheminduponadot,like
untoabonysubstance,whiteofcolour,situatedbetweentheeyebrows.(The
visualizationofthedotis,inthispractice,chieflyforthepurposeofattaining
mentalconcentration,orone-pointednessofmind.)
