OFTEN ROCK GUITARISTS USE ONLY ONE SCALE—
typically blues, major or minor—for an entire solo or tune. Jazzers,
on the other hand, tend to play something different for each chord.
Just as rock players build licks around the blues scale, jazzers build
licks around 7th-chord arpeggios. These usually emphasize the
9, 11 and 13.
Say we’re jamming over a Gm7 chord (Ex. 1a). A rocker might
use a G blues scale (1b) or G Dorian (1c). A jazzer might play licks
built on a Gm9 arpeggio (1d and 1e) or a Gm13 arpeggio (1f ). Instead
of thinking about a scale, flesh out the phrase with notes a half-
step or whole-step above or below each arpeggio tone. Experiment,
letting your ear guide you. As long as you resolve to arpeggio tones,
you can’t hit any sour notes.
To build an arpeggio, target a chord and play the 1st, 3rd, 5th,
7th and 9th tones (add the 11 and 13 if you’re adventurous). As you

work out an arpeggio, visualize its parent
chord form.
Here are some arpeggios along with
their parent chords to get you started
(Ex. 2). Most consist of 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 in
two octaves.
Examples 3-7 show a few typical jazz
licks derived from the previous arpeg-
gios. Change them around to make them
your own, and try combining arpeggios
with blues scales. Always follow your in-
stincts. g
