Patching the game
=================

A word of caution: if the game works properly after installation, you're probably better off without installing any of the patches and mods mentioned below.

All the patches and mods mentioned below can be found in the Patches folder. Note that they are meant to work with the Night of the Raven addon installed.

1) Patch 2.6.0.0 rev2
---------------------
Info:
This patch will actually downgrade your game from version 2.7 to 2.6, but that shouldn't cause any problems. It's required to make other patches and mods work with the game.

Installation:
First create a backup of the game's original executable, Gothic2.exe, located where you installed the game, in the System folder and keep it somewhere safe. Then extract 1. gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.zip archive to where you installed the game, overwriting the original file.

Notice!
The splashscreen that appears when launching the game will now be in German, but the game itself will be in English. If you have problems running the game, use the backup you made.

2) VDFS Patch
-------------
Info:
This patch is supposed to fix the VDFS initialization error. Try to run the game before installing this, if it works then you don't need this fix.

Installation:
Run 2. gothic2_vdfs-patch.exe and install it where you installed the game (it should be able to detect the folder automatically).

3) IronKeep Community Patch v2.10
---------------------------------
Info:
This patch fixes several bugs.

Installation:
Extract 3. g2icp_v2.10_archive.zip archive to where you installed the game, overwriting the original files.

4) Windows 7 nVidia Fix
-----------------------
Info:
This patch is supposed to make the game work on NVIDIA video cards when using Windows 7. Only install this if you have an NVIDIA video card, are using Windows 7 and the game doesn't work!

Installation:
Extract 4. Windows 7 nVidia Fix.zip archive to where you installed the game.

5) Gothic Starter 2.6a
----------------------
Info:
If the game doesn't start after running the executable, but you can see the Gothic 2 process running in Windows Task Manager, install and use this mod. Otherwise, you don't need it.

Installation:
Extract 5. GothicStarter.2.6a.zip archive to where you installed the game. Now you should use GothicStarter.exe to launch the game.

6) Vurt's Gothic II Graphics Overhaul
-------------------------------------
Info:
This mod improves the look of the game by replacing original textures and models with higher resolution versions.

Installation:
Extract 6. Vurt_s_Gothic_II_Graphics_Overhaul_v07.zip archive to where you installed the game.

Warning!
This mod is still being worked on, so you might encounter graphical glitches. Check the following link for updates: forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1145749-G2-MOD-Vurt-s-Gothic-II-Graphics-Overhaul

Tweaking game settings
======================

You can change several game settings using the Gothic.ini file located where you installed the game, in the System folder. Make sure to backup the file before modifying it.

bloodDetail=2
// change this from 0 (no blood) to 3 (max blood) to alter the blood levels in-game

scaleVideos=1
// if you can't see in-game videos, set this to 0 to disable video scaling

playLogoVideos=1
// change this to 0 to disable the intro logo videos

usePotionKeys=0 and useQuickSaveKeys=0
// set these to 1 to enable shortcut keys for using potions and keys for quicksaving / quickloading

pickLockScramble=0
// set this to 1 if you want locks to be scrambled after loading a saved game

zVidResFullscreenX=xxx and zVidResFullscreenY=xxx
// set these to your desired resolution in case you can't select it from the in-game options menu

zStartupWindowed=0
// set this to 1 to play the game in a window

There are more settings you can change and most of them have a description on what they do. Note that some of the settings can also be changed in-game from the options menu.

Problems & potential fixes
==========================

1) The game doesn't start
Try using the starter patch mentioned above. If that doesn't work, launch the game twice, then open Windows Task Manager. You should see two Gothic 2 processes and a rundll32 process. End the rundll32 process and it should also end one of the Gothic 2 processes. The game should then launch properly.

2) The game still doesn't start
It has been reported that the game will not work if you have an instance of Google's Chrome browser running. Exit Chrome if you're using it and try launching the game again.

3) The game still won't start
Turn off DEP for all game executables located where you installed the game, in the system folder. Instructions on how to do so can be found on Microsoft's website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-Data-Execution-Prevention-settings (these apply for Windows 7).

4) The game simply refuses to work
Check if the game is being blocked by a security program. Try changing the Compatibility settings for the main game executable, disabling UAC, installing the latest updates for your version of Windows and the latest driver for your video card (or you could try switching to an older driver). Turn off all non-essential programs before launching the game.

5) Can't view the in-game videos (black screen)
Check the section above for the setting to disable video scaling. You can also try disabling anti-aliasing from your video card configuration utility. If you're using a multi-GPU setup like SLI or CrossFire, try disabling it. If that doesn't fix the problem, then you'll just have to skip the black videos by pressing the Esc key. You can view them online or by installing the RAD Video Tools (http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm) and opening the bik files located where you installed the game, in the folders _work\DATA\video.

6) The game crashes randomly / is really slow in some areas
Try installing some of the patches mentioned above. And remember, save often!
