Itwouldbenoskinoffthe

speak,astheyneverintended,nor
havetheexpertise,toproduceatop
endhousing.Whynotworkwithour
manufacturersandcreateawin,win
situation?
Toputittechnically,theMicroFour
Thirdssystemusesthesamesensor
size(18x13.5mm)butallows
slimmercamerasbyremovingthe
mirrorboxandopticalviewinder.
Removingthemirrormechanism
allowsthisshorterlangeback
distance,meaninglensesforthenew
mountcanbeconsiderablysmaller
thancurrentFourThirdsdesigns.
Theformatwillallowframingtobe
carriedoutusingLiveViewoneither
theLCDmonitororanEVF.
Theothermajorbeneitisa
shutterdelayalmostasgoodasan
SLRwhichhasalways,forme,been
thefrustratingfeatureofcompact
cameras.
Intruththenewformathasbeen
aroundsincelate2008andlikeall
emergingtechnologiesittakestime
toestablishitselfbut,withtheadvent
ofthePanasonicGH2,wehave,
fortheirsttime,acamerathatcan
shoothighqualitystillsandfullHD
videoinanSLRformwhichworks
extremelywellergonomicallybecause
youcanviewthroughtheelectronic
viewinder.Thisbringsthecamerato
youreyewhichisamuchmorestable
wayofshootingeitherstillsorvideo.
Theresult,asfarasIcansee,
isajackofalltradesandmasterof
alltradessituationcombinedwith

thanthethoughtofbuyingacamera
whichmightbeoldhatinacoupleof
weeks.
Icanunderstandwhymajor
cameramanufacturersarevery
secretiveabouttheirdevelopments
butitwouldreallyhelpourindustry
iftheywouldinvolveourhousing
manufacturersearlyoninthedesign
processsothattheycouldbeupto
speedassoonasanewmodelis
launched.
I’mobviouslynottalkingabout
thecompactcameramarkethere
becausethisisverywellcateredfor
New kid on the block
Havingexpressedmysympathy
forourhousingmanufacturersIam
nowgoingtodowhattheyhatethe
most-suggestthatthereisanew
camerathattheyreallyoughtto
considerhousing.
Ipredictthat2011willseesome
majordevelopmentsinthemiddle
ofthemarketi.e.notcompactand
notSLRbutthe4/3rdandAPS
interchangeablelensstylecameras.
Morelenseswillbecomeavailable
from3rdpartymanufacturers
toincreasetheirversatilityand
popularity.
Therewillalsobeasigniicant
developmentinanareabetweenthis
formatandtheSLRwiththeadvent
ofthemirrorlessMicro4/3rdsformat.
