Spring 2011
Undergraduate Program
Objectives:
In History of the United States students will become familiar with the main elements of the
American experience throughout history, from the times of the Pilgrim and Puritan migrants
to New England down to the end of 20
th
century. The course will give full coverage to the main
political, economic, diplomatic, and legal events in the history of the United States. The
interplay between the claims of individualism and the claims of community will be presented
as constitutive of the American distinctness. History of a country that has neither a single race,
single family, nor single ancient tradition to make it a unity is so multilayered that this course
must be seen as an introduction to the subject. At the same time it will attempt to give some
clarifying order to the endlessly diverse and restless facts of American history.

Grading:
Grading will be determined by the number of points scored in the course of the semester. In
the total of 100 points, 30 is available for attendance (2 pts for each), and 70 is available in the
final test. Additional points (up to 10 pts) can be got for an additional assignment, such as
report, individual study or testimonial. Assignments must be approved by the instructor in
advance. They may be turned in any time from May onwards but no later than June 3, 2011.
Grading Scale:
5 (93‐100), 4.5 (85‐92), 4.0 (77‐84), 3.5 (69‐76), 3.0 (61‐68), 2.0 (0‐60)
Final test format:
18 multiple choice questions (1 pt each), 15 matching questions (1 pt each), 15 define the
terms questions (1 pt each), and 4 narrative questions (up to 3 pts for each). The scope of the
tests will be limited to the material presented at lectures and available in the course guide.
