Origin
Transverse processes of upper four to five
thoracic vertebrae, and articular
processesof lower three or four cervical
vertebrae
Insertion
Transverse processes of 2nd through 6th
cervical vertebrae
Actions
Bilaterally, superficial erector spinae
extend the spine; no EMG activity present
when standing erect in neutral posture
Unilaterally, iliocostalis and longissimus
laterally flex (side bend) and rotate to the
opposite side
Nerve
Lateral branches of the dorsal primary
division of the spinal nerves
