INTRODUCTION
“The Da Vinci Code Impromptu Book Test” lets you tap into the runaway success
of Dan Brown’s controversial best-selling novel. With over 60 million copies
already sold worldwide and the release of the ilm version starring Tom Hanks,
there are few topics hotter than this one. So what better or more topical item
to use for a mentalism effect?
What’s more, aside from a prediction slip encoded using the ancient cipher
discussed in the book and an easy-to-use decryption key (we supply ready-to-
print artwork for both), everything else you need to perform the effect can be
borrowed…paper, pens, the book and a deck of cards. There are absolutely no
gimmicks required and you inish completely clean. How many other Book Tests
can stand up to those claims?
THE EFFECT
A phrase on a randomly selected page in The Da Vinci Code is revealed by a prediction; encrypted
with an ancient cipher.
HOW IT WORKS
The page number is forced using playing cards. However, before you dismiss this methodology out of
hand, let me add that this particular force with cards is done in a direct and highly convincing way. And
to a lay audience – appears not only fair, but logical as well. So please read on.
There are only two simple moves involved. The irst is a small packet false shufle and the second,
Brother John Hamman’s popular “Flushtration Count.” The latter being employed to force a card in the
same way the Hindu Shufle can be used – the difference being the Biddle Grip, which is more natural
when handling small packets of cards. Both moves will be covered in detail.
PROPERTIES/SET–UP
Begin with a paperback copy of The Da Vinci Code and a deck of cards on the table. As mentioned, both
of these items can be borrowed. However, if you plan to borrow the book, you must verify beforehand
that the force page is intact and the last three words match the ones you will use in your prediction.
This varies by edition, so it may very well be different. If so, you’ll need to prepare a new prediction
using the cipher key and a piece of the blank Da Vinci note paper (artwork supplied). Again, this must
be done prior to your performance. In addition to the book and cards on the table, the prediction slip
and the Atbash Cipher Key are in a sealed envelope inside your left coat pocket and a small pad of
paper and two pens are in your right.

PRESENTATION AND HANDLING
Patter is shown in italicized type.
“Has anyone read this? It’s an amazing book.”
Pick up the book and rifle the pages with your thumb.
“One of the things I found particularly fascinating was the fact that ancient religious scribes as far back
as 500 BC used a secret code, called the ‘Atbash Cipher,’ to disguise the meaning of some of the words in
their writings.”
Set the book down and reach into your left coat pocket and remove the envelope with your prediction
and the Atbash Cipher Key.
“I used that same ancient code to encrypt a prediction I made earlier. My prediction along with a special ‘key’
that unlocks the coded letters is sealed inside this envelope.”
Have someone sign the envelope and leave it in full view for all to see.
Pick up the deck of cards.
“Just as words can have hidden meanings and translations, so can numbers. What is a deck of cards? If you
think about it, it’s really just a collection of random numbers – numbers which can be assembled into a
wide array of combinations. I’m going to place three different groups of cards on the table – each group
will represent one of three possible digits to help us arrive at a RANDOM page number in this book – one
of 454 possibilities, if you will.”
Run through the deck with the faces toward yourself. In one suit, say Spades, remove the 10 – A – 2 – 3 –
4. Place these in order, face up onto the table (10 on bottom, 4 on the top or face of the face-up pile). In
another suit, say Hearts, remove the 10 – A – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9. Finally, repeat the same values
just dealt for one other suit, say Clubs: 10 – A – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 9. See Photo 1 on the next page.
Pick up the irst (Spade) pile and show the faces to the audience.

“Since the irst digit of the page number can be 0 through 4, this irst group of cards has the 10, Ace, Two,
Three and Four…of Spades. For our experiment, the 10 will represent a ZERO, the Ace a One, and the rest
of the cards their face values.”
Set down the irst pile face down and pick up the second (Hearts) heap. Again, spread the faces toward
the audience – holding them in your left hand.
“This second group of cards; which represents the second digit of the page number is numbered 10…or
Zero…”
With the right hand, take the 10 from the right side of the spread (with the faces toward the audience)
and hold it up to emphasize the point that the 10 is a Zero. Replace it on the right end of the spread.
“Through Nine.”
Set the second group face down and pick up the third (Clubs) and inal pile. Spread the faces toward
the audience.
“And this third group; which represents the third digit of the page number is also numbered Zero through
Nine.”
Set the inal group of cards face down.
“It’s very simple really. Three groups of cards. Each one represents one of three different digits to help us
arrive at a random page number from 1 to 454.”
Gesture at each pile in turn as you make the following remarks…
“Zero through Four…Zero through Nine…Zero through Nine.”
