T h e rich young Americans of the 1920s were different from
the people before them. They had new freedoms, new ways -
and new problems. F. Scott Fitzgerald made it his life's work
to write about them, and in these four stories he describes their
world: exciting, silly, cruel and sometimes sad - and not so
different from our own.
Francis Scott Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise,
made him famous at the age of twenty-four. Soon after, he
married a well-known beauty, Zelda Sayre, and together they
began a fast, brilliant lifestyle that became famous. His best
novel, The Great Gatsby, appeared in 1925, but by the 1930s
the couple's high living had begun to hurt them. Zelda was
suffering from mental illness and Scott from his drinking and
their often disastrous lives. Zelda went into hospital and Scott
tried to earn money by writing films. He died in Hollywood
of a heart attack in 1940, at the age of forty-four. His short
stories and novels are n o w some of the best-loved of all
American writing.
