I have given general instructions
for silk painting which will allow you
to make whichever card you choose.
If you have several events coming up
why not try the whole set, if you have
a large piece of silk (see instructions)
you can paint them all in one go and
save a lot of time.
Materials Required:
Autofade pen.
Habotai 8 silk: 15cm x 15cm.
Silk frame and pins.
Silk paints.
Gold Gutta.
Rock salt.
Thin White card: 11cm x 11cm.
P. V.A. Craft Adhesive.
Card mount: AP53U Dark Green.
To Make The Cards:
Place the silk over the diagram of
your choice and trace over the gold lines
with the auto fade pen. The black lines
and dots show gutta which is added after
painting so leave them for now.
Using three point pins, pin the silk
onto the frame pulling it taut to get a
smooth flat surface. If you don’t have a
silk frame you could use an embroidery
hoop instead.
If you have a large piece of silk and
a large size frame you can do several
different designs, or even more than one
of the same design at once and cut them
apart later. Be sure to trace them with
enough room around each design for
mounting, our diagrams are too close
together for this as they had to be
arranged to fit on the page. I have added
a faint box around each diagram to show
the aperture size, you need to allow an
extra 1cm all round.

To keep the colours at the edge of
each design separate divide the silk into
picture areas with lines of gutta, make
sure you leave a large enough border
round each picture for mounting. Once
the silk is in the frame use gold gutta
to go over the lines traced from the
diagram and allow to dry.
Colour the main design first using
silk paints (leave the background), don’t
overload your brush and always start at
the centre of the pattern letting the paint run to the gutta
border. Wait for the main design to dry.
Paint the background blue and whilst the paint is still
wet lightly sprinkle with salt. The salt
will create lovely patterns of movement
in the paint. You could leave out the salt
and keep just a plain blue background if
you prefer.
When the background is dry gently
brush off the salt, this can be put back
into the pot to use again. Using gold
gutta and working freehand add the
lines and dots shown in black on the
diagrams which were to be added after
painting.
Remove the silk from the frame and
‘fix’ the colours, usually by ironing, but
follow the instructions on the pack.
Cut out the design leaving approx.
1cm all round for mounting. Run a thin
line of glue round the edge of the square
of white card and mount the work onto
this keeping it taut.
Open the card out flat and run a
thin line of glue round the back of the
aperture. Position it over the design and
press into place. Glue the card closed in
the usual way.
