I seem to have spent much of the last month speaking with
photographers. The constantly repeated theme has been the
importance of finding a unique photographic voice, the
continued growth of stills/film convergence, the need for
photographers to work in teams and
the value of remaining inspired and
taking pictures.
This month, as every month, we’ve
tried to put together a magazine that can
address these issues and themes based on the conversations we have
and hear. As Editor-in-Chief of one of the country’s most influential
fashion magazines, ELLE’ s Lorraine Candy is someone worth hearing
from when it comes to getting commissioned, in Frontline on Page 49.
Steve Pyke is now one of the world’s most respected portrait photographers
and an old friend. What he has to say about photography strikes an important
note in these troubled and changing times in Steve Pyke on the Phone on
Page 80.
Walter Iooss is another photographic legend, if relatively unknown over here.
In the US his sports photography and images for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit
issues are iconic. Anyone who has managed to combine such passions with a
successful career needs to be listened to.You can hear what he has to say in an
exclusive interview in The World’s Greatest on Page 60.
Another photographer leading the way in a specific genre is James Merrell.
In the world of interiors and lifestyle photography his is the name on every
client’s lips. So we decided to speak to him to find out why in This Charming
Man on Page 68.
To round off this month’s democratic church of photography we profile
Tom Munro , one of the world’s most influential and successful fashion
photographers working today, in Fashion Secret on Page 88. We also speak
with London-based Jenny Hands about how to successfully combine concepts,
intense cutting-edge styling and dark imagery into commercially accepted
fashion images in Hands Up on Page 74.
When it comes to teamwork we all rely on our kit to deliver the goods,
whenever and however we want to use it. To celebrate the best kit of
2010 we are launching the Professional Awards this month on
Page 92 to let you know what to look out for and as a thanks to all
those manufacturers making our jobs easier.
I hope all of that gives you enough to talk and think about, along with
all of our regular columns and articles. I’ll keep talking to photographers
