Knowing where to start is easy. I want to thank my beautiful wife and best friend, Kathy. She’s
always believed in me (usually more than I believed in myself), encouraged me, and consoled
me. Most of all, she’s loved me for 25 years—even when I’m cranky.
My children, Ken and Erin, are out of the house now, but they still inspire me and
make me proud to be their father. Both of you grew up to be fine adults and I love you.
Finally, I’d like to dedicate this to my other best friend, Bo. Bo was my constant com-
panion and could always be found curled under my desk while I wrote. Part way through this
book, we lost Bo to cancer. I miss him every day, and I hope that when my time comes, he’ll
be there waiting for me with his tennis ball, asking “What took you so long?”
My co-author, Tim Grey, deserves special thanks for taking a chance with the new guy
and agreeing to help write this book. His advice and experience made this project come
together, and his experience and talent made it possible.
Peter Burian is a fine author, friend, and mentor who coached my early attempts at
