The Wawel Royal Castle is undoubtedly one of Poland’s most famous landmarks. It is situated on Wawel Hill overlooking the river Vistula in the ancient city of Cracow. It was on the hill that the earliest settlements in the city began some fifty thousand years ago.

From the mid 11th century to the early 17th century, the rulers of Poland lived in this castle. During the early 16th century, King Sigismund I brought in the best native and foreign artists to refurbish the rooms of the castle in the Renaissance style. After King Sigismund III left Cracow in 1609, the castle no longer functioned as a royal residence.

The castle, which is now open to the public as a museum, is certainly an impressive sight. Its splendid exterior is worth seeing especially for its decorative stonework and imposing arched galleries designed by some of the most famous architects of the Renaissance period.

The interior of the castle is decorated with magnificent 16th century Flemish tapestries showing mainly biblical and mythological scenes. Visitors are allowed to wander through the royal apartments, which are filled with old furniture, artwork and paintings.

No sightseeing tour of Poland would be complete without a visit to the Wawel Royal Castle. It remains one of the stateliest monuments of Renaissance architecture in Europe today.
