Welcome
Did you know that Ufology in the UK is dead again? Actually, it dies on average
once to twice a year and I hope that for 2005, this is its last death for this year.
But one can never tell. As soon as some Ufologist somewhere within the British
Isles feels like getting his name into the papers again and is blessed with a
compliant local press, then anything can happen. I am of course referring to the
latest current bout of newspaper articles in the UK in early August telling us that
it’s all over and that Ufology in the UK is virtually dead. It’s very tiresome.
I consider Chris Parr, who generated the original report upon which all the
subsequent fuss was based, a pal as well as being a good friend of this zine. But I
have to ask him what he feels he might have achieved for Ufology by doing this.
One could argue that any publicity is good publicity and there is some weight to
that point of view. However, the underlying point being made was negative.
I should also point out an element of personal interest here as well. There must
have been easily a half dozen different newspaper articles generated by Chris’s
original piece in his local paper and in those other articles, it seemed like every
waking Ufologist in the UK with a pulse had been quoted. Except me. This of
course I found utterly outrageous and most disappointing. Tsk. (g)
But perhaps I’m blathering and fussing about nothing. I don’t actually agree with
the sentiments expressed as I feel they’re off the mark. Privately though, what
Chris is mostly fretting about are the social changes that have occurred within UK
Ufology over recent years and I think there he has a point. Things have changed
in the UK in that respect but the difficulty with lamenting the past is that you
sound like you’re stuck in it. It’s true that we haven’t yet moved on to a bigger,
brighter future but I do also think that things are “happening” and new
personalities with ideas and initiatives are coming through. At this moment in
time, I am optimistic about the short term.
Ufology in big numbers may have taken a dip lately but the problem hasn’t gone
away. There are still, from time to time, strange things flying about our skies and
they seem to have been doing that for quite a while. I think it’s safe to assume
that they will continue to do so and until answers are provided or are
forthcoming, however large or small the numbers may be, there will always be
people who look further than the parameters of their own personal lives or indeed
the geopolitical system within which they live. It is those people, us, you reading
this that will carry this through, most of us to the bitter end. Further along the
way, we will be joined by larger numbers again, of that I have no doubt, and the
cycle will continue until finally the goal is reached. And I believe we will reach
that goal.
I won’t prattle on too much here about Nick Redfern’s
Body Snatchers
. Those who
have followed the reaction and debate subsequent to publication will know the
state of play. It’s been pretty much as expected – a real mixture. In all fairness to
those who have rejected Nick’s theory, I have thought that with just one
exception, they have all at least been morally honest. Only one I thought was
acting because of self interest. But, it has been truly marvellous the way it has
stirred Ufology up and generated a level of intense debate the likes of which we
haven’t seen for a while. And also as predicted, this one will run and run.

Roswell Reflections
The explosive reaction to Nick’s book,
Body Snatchers In The Desert
was as
expected. Big. We caught up with Nick on July 13
th
and asked him to give us an
update on what his life had been like since the publication.
SM: I imagine, sat here, that it’s been extremely hectic since the book was
published.
NR: Not probably as hectic as you would have thought. Certainly in terms of
interviews particularly for radio, that has been hectic. That’s been literally like 10
or 15 a day at times. I’m talking about things like the Huston Breakfast show
from maybe 9:00 till 10:00 and then maybe a radio show in Kansas from 11:00
till 12:00, that sort of thing with literally just enough time in between to get a
glass of coke or a coffee.
SM: Anything from abroad?
NR: I’ve done a few local shows in the UK, not national ones but regional BBC
shows, that sort of thing. But for the most part it’s been American based radio
interviews, largely focussing on the subject matter of the book. Interestingly,
what I found was a trend. A number of the radio shows were quite happy to talk
about the prime event that led to Roswell with the crash of this huge balloon
array and the glider and the crew but they were very careful to steer me away
from not talking about the more controversial things like the high altitude
experiments and the prisoners of war and so. It was kind of interesting that there
was this concern not to get into the more controversial areas and maybe that
says more about the climate of today’s world and reporting on controversial
issues that make the government look bad, and so on.
SM: You can’t really separate one from the other.
NR: That’s the unfortunate thing. You actually can. You have this one event
where they brought over prisoners of war who were the pilots to test fly this thing

that crashed. But on the other hand, you have these fairly dubious experiments
that were going on in the same time frame and although collectively, as I show in
the book, it led to the Roswell legend, unfortunately you can separate the two
and I’ve actually had emails from radio stations saying, “Look, we want you on
the show but we specifically will not discuss that issue.” That’s happened.
SM: That’s ridiculous.
NR: It is ridiculous, I agree with you because, you know, I always thought the
media would not only have the capabilities to look into these things but would
also have the balls to look into them as well. And to actually say, “Please don’t
talk about this”, to me, is kind of like a pathetic attitude. How do you expect to
resolve anything? More importantly, how do you expect to make sure things like
this never happen again if nobody wants to talk about them? It’s crazy. I’ve never
had that before.
SM: What about TV? Has there been much of that?
NR: No, I’ve done a couple of TV things but they were just spin offs from the
publicity generated by the book people just asking if they could interview me but
it wasn’t specifically on the book as such.
SM: How have you felt about the reaction from people towards the book?
NR: As far as I’m concerned, I’ve been pretty happy with the reaction in terms of
it was precisely what I expected. By that I mean that there have been some
people that believe that I have cracked the case and that this is the literal
answer.
Other people think that perhaps it tells part of the story. One example; someone
came up with the idea that perhaps these classified balloon flights were being
undertaken in New Mexico and because they were such huge devices, one of
them collided with a real UFO. So you have a mish mash of classified projects and
a UFO colliding together and that’s what’s led to these stories about UFOs coming
down but also about classified vehicles coming down, which is an interesting
theory. Again, that is another one that I suspected would come along.
Thirdly, there is the idea that people have simply fed me disinformation. Along
that line, Stan Friedman actually told me that he doesn’t necessarily believe that
the people I interviewed are lying. He thinks that this could possibly be a cover
story put in place by the government years ago, kind of like Mogul, but that they
then decided not to use it. Now, again that’s interesting but my argument against
that, and I think it’s a legitimate argument, is why on earth would the
government come up with a cover story that was that controversial? The whole
point with Mogul is, in some ways it would explain the secrecy surrounding the
recovery of the balloon, but there’s nothing controversial about it. To me, it’s like
kicking yourself in the teeth by covering up a crashed UFO by claiming that you
did diabolical experiments on prisoners of war.
Those sorts or responses that came along were the type that I expected. There
hasn’t been much in the way of jealousy from the UFO community and I didn’t
actually think there would be, although some people did say to me they thought,
“Oh well, if you think you’ve solved it, people are going to be jealous.” I actually
never thought that would be the case and in the most part, it hasn’t been. As I
said to people, all I’m trying to do is put out the information I’ve uncovered. Not
to try and beat somebody to the finishing line.
