E NGLISH TO P ĀLI EXERCISES IN A.K. W ARDER S I NTRODUCTION TO P ALI
Although the English to Pāli exercises in Warder are based on passages found in the
Dīgha-nikāya, Majjhima-nikāya, and Vinaya-piaka, there are of course no set “answers” to
Warder’s exercises but, rather, several possible Pāli translations. As such, the translations
given below are only guides or suggestions. I have tried to remain as close as possible to
the Pāli of the original texts (as represented in the PTS editions), but sometimes this has
been modified, partly in order to conform with the grammar and vocabulary covered by
Warder as far as the chapter in question, and partly because Warder sometimes adjusts the
original. I have largely followed Warder’s style of writing Pāli: for example, no capitals at
the beginning of sentences (unless the initial word is a proper noun), no question marks or
quotation marks, ko ci rather than koci , etc.

Exercise 18
eka samaya bhagavā Koiyesu viharati. atha kho Puo ca Koiyaputto govatiko
acelo ca Seniyo kukkuravatiko yena bhagavā ten’ upasakamisu. upasakamitvā Puo
Koiyaputto govatiko bhagavanta abhivādetvā ekamanta nisīdi. acelo pana Seniyo
kukkuravatiko bhagavatā saddhi sammodi. sammodanīya katha sārāīya vītisāretvā
kukkuro va palikujjitvā ekamanta nisīdi. ekamanta nisinno kho Puo Koiyaputto
govatiko bhagavanta etad avoca:
aya, bhante, acelo Seniyo kukkuravatiko dukkarakārako. tassa ta kukkuravata
dīgharatta samādia. tassa ko abhisamparāyo ti.
ala, Pua, tihat’ eta. mā ma eta pucchī ti. […] api ca te aha vyākarissāmi.
idha, Pua, ekacco kukkuravata bhāveti paripua. so kukkuravata bhāvetvā
paripua, kukkurasīla bhāvetvā paripua, kukkuracitta bhāvetvā paripua,
kukkurākappa bhāvetvā paripua, param maraā kukkurāna sahavyata upapajjati.
sace kho pan’ assa eva dihi hoti : iminā ’ha sīlena vā vatena vā devo bhavissāmī ti, sā
’ssa hoti micchādihī ti.
Exercise 19
kullūpama vo, bhikkhave, dhamma desessāmi nittharaatthāya, no gahaatthāya.
seyyathā pi puriso maggappaipanno. so passeyya mahanta udakaava, orima tīra
sāsaka sappaibhaya, pārima tīra khema appaibhaya ; na c’ assa nāvā setu vā
apārā pāra gamanāya. tassa evam assa:

tiakahasākhāpalāsa sakahitvā, kulla bandhitvā, ta kulla nissāya sotthinā
pāra uttareyyan ti.
atha kho so puriso tiakahasākhāpalāsa sakahitvā, kulla bandhitvā, ta kulla
nissāya, sotthinā pāra uttareyya. tassa tiassa pāragatassa evam assa :
bahukāro kho me aya kullo. ya nūnāha ima kulla sīse āropetvā pakkameyyan
ti.
ta ki maññatha, bhikkhave. api nu so puriso evakārī tasmi kulle kiccakārī assā ti.

idha, bhikkhave, tassa purisassa tiassa pāragatassa evam assa :

Exercise 20
tena kho pana samayena Vesālī iddhā c’ eva hoti phītā ca. Ambapālī gaikā abhirūpā
hoti pāsādikā paramāya vaapokkharatāya samannāgatā. padakkhiā nacce ca gīte ca
vādite ca. abhisaā atthikāna manussāna paññāsāya ratti gacchati, tāya ca Vesālī
bhiyyoso mattāya upasobhati.
atha kho Rājagahako negamo Vesāli agamāsi kenacid eva karaīyena. addasa kho
Vesāli iddha ca phīta ca, Ambapāli ca gaika, tāya ca Vesāli bhiyyoso mattāya
upasobhita. 6 atha kho negamo Rājagaha paccāgacchi. yena rājā Māgadho Seniyo
Bimbisāro ten’ upasakami, upasakamitvā etad avoca:
Vesālī, deva, iddhā c’ eva phītā ca, tāya ca Vesālī bhiyyoso mattāya upasobhati. sādhu,
deva, mayam pi gaika vuhāpeyyāmā ti.
tena hi, bhae, tādisi kumāri jānātha ya tumhe gaika vuhāpeyyāthā ti.
tena kho pana samayena Rājagahe Sālavatī nāma kumārī abhirūpā hoti pāsādikā
paramāya vaapokkharatāya samannāgatā. atha kho negamo Sālavati kumāri gaika
vuhāpesi. atha kho Sālavatī na cirass’ eva padakkhiā ahosi nacce ca gīte ca vādite ca.
abhisaā atthikāna manussāna satena ratti gacchati. atha kho Sālavatī na cirass’ eva
gabbhinī ahosi. atha kho Sālavatiyā etad ahosi:
itthī kho gabbhinī purisāna amanāpā. sace ma ko ci jānissati Sālavatī gabbhinī ti,
sabbo me sakkāro parihāyissati. ya nūnāha gilānā ti paivedeyyan ti.
atha kho Sālavatī dovārika āāpesi:
mā, bhae dovārika, ko ci puriso pāvisi. yo ma pucchati, gilānā ti paivedehī ti.
eva, ayye ti kho so dovāriko Sālavatiyā gaikāya paccassosi.
Exercise 21
atha kho Sālavatī gaikā tassa gabbhassa paripāka anvāya putta vijāyi. atha kho
Sālavatī dāsi āāpesi:
handa, je, ima dāraka kattarasuppe pakkhipitvā nīharitvā sakārakūe chaehī ti.
