One recommended MPEG compliant viewer is Microsoft's Active Movie. This software is packaged with Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2, Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 Full Installation. Machines with Windows 95 OSR2 can be confirmed by clicking on the Start button, selecting Settings, Control Panel, and System. On the General tab the version number should be 4.00.950 B. If this is the case, then you have OSR2, and most likely Active Movie comes preinstalled on your system. Most installations place Active movie in the Multimedia folder. This can be found by clicking on the Start button, Programs, Accessories, Multimedia. It is usually called Active Movie Control. If you do not have Active Movie installed, you can see if you have a program associated with .mpg extension by double clicking on one of the .mpg files. If a program loads up and starts playing the file, you are all set. If not, you may have to do some reconfiguring. Troubleshooting --------------- It is recommended that you exit out of all unnecessary programs running in the background. Failure to do so may result in "choppy" picture and audio quality. If the videos do not play at all try opening a video manually by completing the following steps: In Windows 95/98 Click on the Start button. Go to Programs, then Accessories, then Multimedia, and then Media Player. When Media Player opens, choose File, Open. Set the Look In to your CD-ROM Drive. When the contents of the CD-ROM are loaded, choose the video directory and double click on ATZPWRINST.MPG to play the file. Push the Play button. If the video plays, the problem is the program your computer has associated to play mpg files. You can either run the videos manually, or continue reading to change the association. Some systems may have .mpg files registered to software, which is not MPEG Level 1 compliant. In order to remove the association between the software and the .mpg extension you must edit the registry. !!WARNING!! Directly editing the registry can be hazardous to your system's stability. I HIGHLY suggest you export your registry to a backup file BEFORE you edit it. That way, should a mistake be made, you can restore your original registry thus restoring the functionality of your system with little effort. In order to edit the registry, click on the Start button, Run and type in regedit. At this point you should back up your registry with the "Export Registry File..." option under the File menu. Click on Edit, Find... option. Type in .mpg and click the Find Next button. Find a datakey under the hive HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Under the SOFTWARE, Classes folders there will be a group of extension file types. The find command should have found something like .mpg with several of entries in it. Remove the data entry that names a software program associated with .mpg files. After deleting the registry key, you may or may not have to create a new registry entry for .mpg for your specific software. To create a new association open Windows Explorer. Click on the View file, and select options. This will bring up two tabbed pages: View and File Type. Select the File Type tab and click on new type. This will bring up a new screen which is titled New File Type. Enter in MPEG Level 1 into the Description of type field. Under the Association Extension and Content_Type (MIME) enter .mpg When you do this, the Default Extension for Content Type should register .mpg in the drop-down text box. Then click on the New... button and select open for the actions. This will open another screen which says 'Always Open' with. Enter in the path and name of the software executable that supports MPEG Level 1 files. If you don't know the path or don't know the executable for the software, click on the browse button and find it on your hard drive. DO NOT click 'Use DDE' on this screen! Click ok to accept your new application as the default for .mpg movie files. Check to make sure Confirm Open After Download is selected at the bottom of the screen. Click OK again. This should be all you have to do to register the new file type. To test the new association, open Windows Explorer and double-click on one of the .mpg files on the CD. If it does not open or gives you an error, delete the association and redo the above process.
