Strangeas itmayseem tobe writing this, here Iam. Afterall, who couldhave
imaginedafewyears ago that CMDwouldput it's efforts intoproducing a magazine
forthe Commodore 64 and 128market. We'dalways taken itforgrantedthatRUNand
Compute'sGazette wouldbe with usforaslong as there wasa viable market. While a
lotofthe earliermagazinesfellby the wayside, that wasduemore to naturalfallout
than anything else.
WhenRUNthrew in the towel, wewere a bitsuprised. Itseemedveryprematurefor
them to leaveatthattime. While we hadn'talways likedthe contentofRUN, itdidkeep
themarketconnected, andsuppliedvendors with aplace to advertise. Compute's
Gazettedidtoo, though wefelttoa lesserdegreeeversince theywereboughtand
mergedinto themulti-editions. Theirconstantproblems with subscriptionproblems
didn'thelp either, andtheybecamesomewhatnotoriousforit. Sad, becauseIcan recall
starting out in myearlydayswith Compute!, anditgaveme endlesshoursofpleasure.
With the announcementthatCompute's Gazette wouldconvertto a disk-based
publication, weknewsomething hadtobe done. The upstartdieHardhasdone well,
andwe're gladthat they have. Butthemarketcan certainlyhandle more than one
paper-basedpublication, andmanyarefearfid todeal with upstarts. We couldonly
conclude thai CMDneededtoput it'snameandknowledge intoa newpublication—the
oneyou're now reading.
Strangeasitmayseemforustofindourselves in themagazinebusiness, it'sa role
which we take seriously. Wehope toprovide users with the kindofinfonnation that
they want, andin a timelymanner. Sadly, thisfirst issue isarrivinga couple ofweeks
laterthan we hadhoped; butbeing ourfirstissue, we'vehadafewhurdles to clear,
anda lotofthings to learn. Wefullyexpectforthcoming issues to remain on a stable
schedule, witha newone arriving inyourhands everysixto seven weeks.
There's a lot inside this issue, but expecteven more infuture issues. You'llnotice that
we'veoptedfora lot ofregularcolumns anda single mainfeaturearticle. We may
expandon thefeaturessomewhatoverthenextfewissues, but we won't be cuttingback
on columns to do it. Wefeet that the regularcolumns do more la bring users constant
information on theirfavoritesubject, andwehopeyou'IIagree. Ourreviewsection will
alsogrow, with morepagesdevotedto it beginning next issue.
BeforeIclose, Ihave to extend the thanksfrom ourstaffforthestrong subscription
supportwe've receivedearly on. We're hopefid that we'Hbeable to meetyour
expectations. Wlietherwedo ornot ispartly up to you, though, soplease take the time
to write usandlet usknowhow we're doing.
