INTRODUCTION
Collecting World Coins is designed to offer a focused
approach to world coin collecting, catering to the needs
of the beginner, novice or casual collector; or the
experienced collector interested only in coinage minted
for circulation. No commemoratives, sets, or special
issues are included in this catalog. This reference is not
intended as an enhancement to our other numismatic
catalogs – rather a response to a specific need.
The scope of this volume embraces issues since
1901 circulated by nations around the globe. The
coverage of silver and non-precious metal coinages is
broad based, generally speaking, while the coverage of
gold coinages is limited to those which enjoyed currency
status at the time of issue, or have been popularly traded
in later years as bullion issues.
The presentation of listings is detailed and
comprehensive. The catalog presents listings of all
issues which were struck for circulation, including
dates and mints of issue, along with mintage figures
where available and valuations in up to five grades of
preservation.
This book provides thorough, but not absolute
coverage of its broad sweeping range. What you will not
find listed are those coin issues expressly created for
non-monetary purposes, including limited issue
commemorative coinages. You will find a few gold
issues, as prior to World War II many were produced to
serve circulating monetary needs.
The objective of this volume, then, is to provide users
with accurate, reliable and instructive information on
20th and 21st century monetary issue coins – coins of
great historical value, which attribute is drawn from the
people, events and symbols emblazoned on them.
This book is keyed to enabling all to easily and quickly
identify coins which require attribution to country or
valuation. Two key features facilitate this purpose; an
Instant Identifier guide that focuses on dominant design
characteristics, including monograms, which when
coupled with a comprehensive Country Index
documenting the variable forms of country names that
appear on subject coins, enables the user to quickly
attribute any monetary world coin issue to its’ country
of origin.
The key feature of the country listings is the
integration of actual size coin illustrations, which allows
quick identification, by type, of all denominations and
design changes. Listings are accompanied by complete
documentation of dates of issue and mintages as well
as metals of issue, with the addition of Actual Silver
Weight (ASW) and Actual Gold Weight (AGW) figures
for all listed coins struck of silver or gold alloys.
From Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, the listings are
catalogued, in most cases, according to the name found
on the coins. Thus the coins of the old Belgian Congo
are listed under B, and not under their current
geographic country of Zaire. Coins of the German States
are listed alphabetically under the group heading of
German States. If you have a concern, please check
the country index.
The country listings are arranged, generally, in
ascending denomination and date of issue cataloging
style popularly employed in American coin catalogs. In
a few cases, many of the countries in the Islamic world,
coins are listed by ruler and then in ascending
denomination order. Furthermore, divisions are made
for monetary reforms, thus the coins of France are
separated by pre-war and post–war monetary reforms,
as well as the new euro coinage. Catalog numbers
accompany each coin cataloged. Prefixes are those that
prevail in the marketplace; principally they are the KM#
carried in the Standard Catalog of World Coins authored
by Chester L. Krause and Clifford Mishler.
Users of this catalog seeking to advance their
collecting pursuit are referred to the complete listings
offered in the comprehensive Standard Catalog of
World Coins , 20th Century edition, an annual volume
providing coverage of all countries from 1901 to 2000.
Companion 17th, 18th, 19th and 21st century editions
present in five volumes total, world coin issues from
1601 to the present.
Collectors seriously interested in expanding their
pursuit of world coins should consider subscribing to
World Coin News , another Krause Publications product,
the only monthly hobby newspaper devoted exclusively
to world numismatic subjects. In addition to presenting
a wide range of news reports covering various aspects
of the world coin collecting realm, each issue also
features World Coin Roundup , a detailed presentation
of timely information on newly released issues from
around the globe, plus newly discovered varieties
unearthed by scholars form many countries. More
