blade environment

Before we discuss the storage consolidation and data
protection solutions available for your BladeSystem, let
us briefly discuss the connectivity options and choice
points available to you.
Internal vs. External
Depending on where your HP BladeSystem enclosure
is being deployed you may choose an ”infrastructure
in-a-box” where both servers and storage are located
inside the enclosure. This is common in remote office
environments where space is at a premium.
HP BladeSystem and Simply StorageWorks have been
integrated by design to complement your BladeSystem
with common hardware, management tools, and
interfaces to help you migrate, optimize, and transform
your server and storage infrastructure, which will in
turn help your business reduce costs and respond
more effectively to change. With these integrated
solutions you can:

centralized and high-performance storage arrays
and optimized NAS file/print serving solutions.
•Makesurethatyourdataissafeandsecure.
Automating your backup or moving towards backup
strategies that utilize both disk and tape, vastly
improving your recovery points and recovery times.
A majority of deployments, however, will connect
external storage to the servers inside the enclosure.
This allows you to increase server deployment in the
enclosure and benefit from options like Virtual Connect
to simplify external storage.

External Storage: Thinking outside
the box
One of the key benefits of your HP BladeSystem
infrastructure is the simplicity with which you can
connect to external storage. The design of the
infrastructure has reduced cable requirements by up to
94% 1 . The Virtual Connect architecture lets you wire
the infrastructure once, and add, replace, or recover
blades on the fly, without impacting networks or
storage. There are several different connectivity options
available for connecting storage to your enclosure.
Fibre Channel (FC): For larger, more demanding
environments, Fibre Channel (FC) provides 8 Gb/sec
performance and the highest levels of scalability. FC
supports longer distances, and due to a large existing
FC installed base, may be the preferred option for
larger customers connecting to the corporate SAN.
iSCSI: For midsize environments, iSCSI provides
a cost-effective shared storage option and uses
standard Ethernet hardware. Like FC, it supports
SAN connectivity over distance, and added path
redundancy over a switched network. 1 Gb/sec
performance is sufficient for small and midsize
deployments where cost is a primary driver.
Direct connect SAS: Serial attached SCSI (SAS) is an
option that allows servers and storage to be connected
with a cable connection through the HP StorageWorks
3 Gb SAS BL Switch rather than a dedicated storage
network. SAS provides 3 Gb/sec performance, and
due to the local nature of the storage has the advantage
of low-latency. This makes it an exceptional choice for
application swap file space or server boot volumes.
To connect your HP BladeSystem to external storage,
HP offers a variety of interconnect hardware modules,
which support Fibre Channel, Ethernet/iSCSI, and direct
connect SAS. The built-in Virtual Connect architecture
includes a 5 Terabit backplane that supports redundant
fabrics, and includes multiple interconnect bays. All
interconnect options are hot-pluggable and can be
installed in pairs for full redundancy.
