Overview
Introduction
HP Data Protector software automates high-performance backup and recovery with scalable data protection from disk or
tape to enable 24x7 business continuity while providing a compelling price to performance ratio.
As an important component of the fast-growing HP Software portfolio, HP Data Protector software is an integral part of HP's
Business Continuity and Availability (BC&A) strategy. Appropriate for medium and large companies in any industry, Data
Protector is the ideal solution to reduce IT costs and complexity while remaining reliable and scalable to grow from single
server environments to the largest distributed enterprise infrastructures. Data Protector Software responds to the pressure
for lower IT costs and greater operational efficiency by offering acquisition and deployment costs which are 30 - 70 % less
than the competition. The licensing model is simple and easy to understand, helping to reduce complexity. Extensive
scalability and features for continuous backup and recovery operations enable growth with a single product.
What's New
Improving Support for Virtualization
Data Protector 6.1 now offers enhanced support for VMware environments, through a fully integrated VMware application
agent. With this new application agent, the user can initiate or schedule a snapshot-based, on-line backup of virtual
machines at any time - and it can all be managed through the Data Protector GUI.
The new VMware application agent fully supports key VMware infrastructure components, such as VMotion and DRS.
VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) is also supported, so that the backup can be completely offloaded from the ESX server
and VMs if desired. The user can simply choose whether they would prefer to utilize the agent on the ESX server itself, or a
VCB proxy server - providing maximum flexibility to meet the needs of every environment. Within this VMware-based backup
methodology, incremental snapshots are also now supported, to further minimize the impact on both the ESX servers and
the network.
Additionally, the user has to option to combine the versatility of the new VMware agent with the power of Data Protector's
Zero Downtime Backup and Instant Recovery components. In such a configuration, the snapshots can first be taken to
protect the VM itself, and then the application data is protected using Zero Downtime Backup/Instant Recovery (supported
on any HP EVA or XP disk array). This combination is a unique solution in the industry, and provides the best of both worlds:
Impact-free backup at all layers
No load on the ESX servers or VMs
Instantaneous recovery of all application data
HP Data Protector Software also supports several other virtualized environments, such as Microsoft Virtual Server 2005,
Windows 2008 Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, and HP Integrity VM. For Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer, users can load the Data
Protector agents directly on the virtual machines for single object backup and recovery, leveraging the rich and seamless
Data Protector application integrations - and providing the ability to restore those applications to virtually any point in time.
And with other operating systems, such as HP Integrity VM and Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 (now with VSS support), users
now have the additional option of loading a Data Protector agent directly on the hosting OS - enabling SAN-based backups,
and enabling robust disaster recovery by providing the capability to protect and restore an entire VM with crash-consistent,
snapshot-based backups at the click of a button.

Optimizing Storage Capacity
With HP Data Protector 6.1, you can now optimize the storage capacity of your environment in a number of ways. The

series of incremental backups on to virtually any disk or tape-based media destination quickly and easily. Best of all, this can
be accomplished without placing any additional burden on the network, or on the systems themselves.
For virtual tape libraries offering de-duplication capabilities, Data Protector takes full advantage of those features - allowing
companies to store up to 50 times as much data in the same amount of disk space (see www.hp.com/go/dataprotector, and
click "Support Matrices" for the latest list of supported devices). And with products like the HP Virtual Library System, Data
Protector achieves a tighter level of integration than any competitor through its newly added support for the Smart Copy
feature. This new feature provides automated and transparent movement of data between the VLS and physical tape
libraries.
Data Protector's support of Smart Copy is another example of a customer benefit that is entirely unique in the industry. By
offloading the copy operations to the VLS, traffic on the SAN is reduced, and gives users the option to free up additional
space on the VLS for disk backups. The feature is completely managed and controlled through Data Protector, and also
provides the improved performance of disk backup. Cost efficiency is another important benefit provided by HP Smart Copy -
no drive or library licensing is required in Data Protector for the physical tape libraries that are connected to a VLS via Smart
Copy. These libraries are considered an "extension" of the VLS storage from a licensing perspective.
Lowering Total Cost of Ownership
From licensing and support pricing, to automated agent installation and easy-to-use software, HP Data Protector has always
led the industry in delivering an enterprise solution with extremely low cost of ownership. Data Protector advances its
leadership in this area even further with the version 6.1 release, through the following enhancements.
Ensuring Security Compliance - Keeping your data secure is now easier than ever with the new centralized key management
feature in Data Protector 6.1. With a Data Protector solution, users have the choice of client-based encryption for end-to-end
security of their data, or they can take advantage of the encryption functionality in LTO4 tape drives for encryption with no
performance impact on backup speeds.
Either way, the data is completely secure with AES 256-bit encryption (the most advanced available), ensuring full
compliance with all government and regulatory requirements. And most importantly, all encryption keys are managed
centrally within Data Protector.
Enabling Continuous Data Protection - For systems running Windows 2000 and above, HP Data Protector Software now has
the ability to utilize the built-in Microsoft Windows Change Journal to quickly generate a list of files that have been altered
since the last backup was performed. This option avoids the need for timely "tree walks" to identify files that have changed,
which can be especially time-consuming on systems with many small files. This allows incremental backups to run much
faster and more frequently than with previous versions.
When combining this feature with the power of Data Protector's synthetic and virtual full, and backups that can now be
scheduled with granularity down to the 1 minute level, Data Protector is now capable of providing near-continuous data
protection - at no additional cost to the user.
Enhancing Application and Platform Coverage - HP Data Protector Software 6.1 continues to add to its broad list of
supported hardware, applications, and platforms. Recent additions include Windows 2008 and Vista support, Exchange
2007 enhancements, and new versions of SAP, Oracle, Informix, DB2, along with many others. Check the Data Protector

Data Protector has also been expanded to offer its full set of functionality on additional platforms. For example, with version
6.1, the management GUI can now be run on Linux systems. Bare Metal Disaster Recovery is now supported on Windows
Vista. And several other changes have been made to the performance and usability of Data Protector - reporting
improvements, scheduler enhancements, and even an increase to the scalability of the internal database - to confirm its
place as the most versatile and cost-effective data protection solution in the industry today.
