Versatile Foam

Foam is such a versatile medium
to use, it can be readily cut to any
shape, comes in a great range of
bright colours, it is chunky giving
a bit of ‘body’ to the designs and
is nice and soft to the touch.
Materials Required:
Mixed foam rubber sheets: FRS20
(may not always contain every
colour used here).
Scissors and a pencil.
Tracing paper and carbon paper.
Happy Birthday sequin.
Fine felt tipped or gel pens: Black, Red, White
and Silver.
Small joggle eyes 5mm: TRM03.
Large joggle eyes 7mm: TRM04.
Backing paper: Gold and Blue.
Double sided tape: ADH13.
Selection of card mounts.
To Make The Cards:
Choose the design you would like to make
and trace the outlines of the pieces from the dia-
gram on the last page (of this article). The dotted
lines and any details within the shape are easiest
drawn onto the piece freehand later, they are
shown on the diagram for guidance only.
Place the trac-
ing paper over the
foam of the rele-
vant colour and
slip the carbon
paper in between
them making sure
the inked side is
facing the foam.
Retrace over the
outlines to transfer
them, the inked
side will be the
back of the piece
so any lines left
after cutting will
not show on the
front of the work.

Cut out the pieces and draw in any details
using the diagram as a guide. The dotted lines
mostly just follow the outline of the shape, try to
keep the ‘dashes’ fairly even for a neater look.
The writing on the cards can usually be added
before or after sticking the shapes on, except
where the shapes overlap it, in which case it has
to be done first. If using aperture cards, mount
the background into the card and stick the card
closed before adding the foam pieces.
Use double sided tape to attach the pieces to
the cards and to each other. Build up the designs
using the photos to guide you and overlapping
the pieces as necessary.
