The Ennobled Dragonslayer
Breck cracked his knuckles and squinted in the bright light of the desert sun. He
brushed sand out of his eyes and glared at his companions, who were equally as
uncomfortable squatting beside a sand dune waiting for a foe that had failed to show up
over the last ten days. The only one of them that didn’t seem bothered by the sun and the
sand was the one who seemed most out of place among the weary band of adventurers:
donning full plate armor with a heavy steel shield adorned with the symbol of her
goddess of the hunt and carrying a worn looking bastard sword, the slayer who had
organized this hunt had not moved, had not spoken, had barely breathed since their
arrival.
“How the hell are you not cookin’ inside that tin can of yours?” Breck asked
gruffly, his voice edged with contempt at having to spend yet another wasteful day in the
heat of the desert.
The slayer didn’t respond but suddenly tensed, her sword leaping from its
scabbard and into her waiting grasp.
Breck looked about bewildered but saw nothing. He grumbled and looked once
more at the slayer, who stood ready for a foe none of them could sense.
“What the hell are…?!” Breck was cut off as the sand dune erupted and brought
forth the scaly head of the blue dragon they had been hunting. The dragon was among
the oldest and largest Breck had ever seen, its dull scales each the size of his greataxe.
The beast let loose a roar that shook the resolve from some of his companions and sent
them scattering into the desert. Breck’s own heart lost his courage and he closed his
eyes, expecting the end was upon them all in their ignorance to face so mighty a creature.
But, as the dragon began to breath, the slayer strode forth with sword held high,
crying out an oath to slay all evil wyrms without mercy, without hesitation. The dragon’s
maw opened wide as the slayer approached, threatening to swallow her whole. The
slayer’s sword flashed in the brilliant sunlight and Breck could not see if the blow
landed.
It mattered not for the dragon’s cry of surprise and pain was more than evident
that the slayer had struck true. The sword flashed again and once more, the dragon
screamed. It was on the fifth stroke that the dragon’s cry no longer echoed in Breck’s
ears and he opened his eyes again. The sand was stained dark red with the dragon’s
blood and the slayer was perched atop the creature’s head, calmly wiping her blade off
on her tabard.
“I have a duty. I have a cause. I am devoted to both, as they are one and the
same. That is how I am not cooking inside my tin can as you so eloquently put it, half
orc.” The slayer said, her voice muffled by her helm but more than audible to the stunned
Breck.
Breck just shook his head and praised the goddess had blessed the slayer with
such prowess and cursed his own for his bad luck of being hired by one.

Evil dragons have long plagued the world and are among the most powerful of
foes. Many adventurers have lost their lives trying to destroy these evil foes, their
remains scattered among the evil dragon's hoard and their failure serves as a warning to
all. Yet one breed of warrior stands strong, ready to challenge the evil that resides within
draconic hearts. With shining sword held aloft and enchanted shield ready, the ennobled
dragonslayer is the most hated foe of evil dragons and has devoted his life to their
destruction. Battle-hardened and fiercely determined, the ennobled dragonslayer roams
the world on an endless crusade to rid the world of evil dragons. Only a few dedicated,
martial-inclined individuals choose to undergo the harsh training that an ennobled
dragonslayer must undertake before becoming a full-fledged ennobled dragonslayer and
this breed of warrior remains rare throughout the world. But those who do have the
determination and conviction to become ennobled dragonslayers are indeed destined to
become heroes of legend.
Adventures: Ennobled dragonslayers adventure to hunt down and destroy evil dragons
of all breeds and color. Most ennobled dragonslayers are tireless and nomadic, forever
searching out their hated enemy yet all uphold the oaths they take upon entering their
class. While ennobled dragonslayers prefer to work alone, they will join adventuring
companies if they are going up against a great foe that would slay them in single combat
or hold the same burning conviction to eradicate all evil dragons that the ennobled
dragonslayer possesses.
Characteristics: Ennobled dragonslayers are stern, single-minded individuals who have
one purpose in life: destroying evil dragons. This purpose consumes their every thought,
almost to the point of reckless obsession. They serve as the judge, jury, and executioner
of evil dragons and carry out their sentence without remorse or mercy. The ennobled
dragonslayer, while a compassionate soul to those who are deemed innocent, holds no
mercy or hope of redemption in their hearts for evil dragons. Those goodly deities that
see evil dragons as a serious threat champion the cause of the ennobled dragonslayer and
grant him paladin-like abilities, allowing him to carry out his mission more easily and in
their name. Ennobled dragonslayers are fearless, steadfast, and tempered by their
conviction. If they come upon an evil dragon, no force in the world save death can
prevent an ennobled dragonslayer from entering combat with the dragon. With divine
powers, resistance to draconic abilities, and fearlessness, the ennobled dragonslayer is
prepared to face any scaly foe.
Alignment: All ennobled dragonslayers are of lawful good alignment. This is because
of the strict oath that all ennobled dragonslayers must swear and follow called the “Oath
of The Noble Slayer”, in which the ennobled dragonslayer swears to destroy all evil
dragons and give no quarter to those that would scheme with the scaled tyrants. The
“Oath of the Noble Slayer” upholds most of the tenants as the paladin’s code. The
ennobled dragonslayer is the selected champion of the deities of good and law and they
will never grace a non-lawful good warrior with the mantle of the ennobled dragonslayer.

Religion: Ennobled dragonslayers devote themselves to lawful good deities. Many of
these deities are gods of conflict, the hunt, and war. The primary god and divine sponsor
of the ennobled dragonslayer is the Father God of goodly dragons, who uses mortals as
his champions in his endless war against the evil cousins of his goodly children.
Background: Ennobled dragonslayers are born from the hearts of people who have a
special hatred for evil dragons and the conviction to destroy them. Many were the victim
of dragon attacks and now wish to see their tormentors destroyed in the name of good and
personal as well as divine vengeance. Many ennobled dragonslayers were knights or
warriors who received a calling similar to a paladin’s and their deity charged them with
destroying all evil dragons. All seeking to become ennobled dragonslayers must
undertake the “Oath of the Noble Slayer” and complete a quest to test their mettle. The
quest varies from deity to deity but usually requires them to retrieve an egg from an evil
dragon's lair, assist in the finding or slaying of an evil dragon, or defending a village from
a dragon attack. Many do not survive their quest but the few who do receive the mantle
of the ennobled dragonslayer and the blessing of their deity.
Races: Most ennobled dragonslayers are humans or dwarves, for few of the other races
have the conviction and dedication to good and law that these two races often possess.
Many dwarves take up the mantle of the ennobled dragonslayer to defend their mountain
holds from red dragons while humans are called to the ranks of the ennobled
dragonslayer after a personal tragedy at the hands of evil dragons or by the will of their
deity. Very few elves take up this class for the flighty nature of most elves prevents them
from fully dedicating themselves to being an ennobled dragonslayer. Half-elves, who
often have human ambition, sometimes heed the call of becoming an ennobled
dragonslayer. Halfings, gnomes and half orcs rarely become ennobled dragonslayers.
Among the savage humanoids, ennobled dragonslayers are all but unheard of.
Other Classes: Most ennobled dragonslayers are loners, carrying out their cause and
relying on temporary alliances with other adventurers only in times of great need. Some
ennobled dragonslayers form companies of like-minded adventurers and fellow
dragonslayers to help them slay a particularly crafty foe or carry out a crusade against
marauding wyrms. Fighters and rangers work well with ennobled dragonslayers,
although their fanatic devotion makes them seem foolhardy to these two classes.
Paladins view the ennobled dragonslayer as a righteous yet merciless knight and the two
classes often clash over views of religion and redemption. Opportunistic rogues and
bards have no problems working with the ennobled dragonslayer as once the dragon has
been slain, there is usually glory and a hoard to be had. Barbarians and ennobled
dragonslayers clash for the barbarian's chaotic nature irritates the ennobled dragonslayer
to no end and vice versa. Arcane and divine spellcasters of a lawful nature get along well
enough with ennobled dragonslayers and their magic abilities come in handy when facing
dragons in battle. Chaotically aligned individuals rarely strike up lasting friendship with
the ennobled dragonslayer.
