In An Introductory History of British Broadcasting Andrew Crisell provides a concise
and accessible history of British radio and television. This book considers the nature
and evolution of broadcasting, the growth of broadcasting institutions and the relation
of broadcasting to a wider political and social context.
Beginning with the genesis of radio at the turn of the century, Crisell
discusses key moments in media history, from the first wireless broadcast
in 1920, to issues which affect the media today. The topics covered include:
the evolution of the BBC from private company to public institution
notions of public service broadcasting and the cultural values of the BBC
broadcasting in wartime and the golden age of radio
the rise of television and the birth of ITV
the changing role of radio in a television age
BBC 2, Channel 4 and the development of minority television
the rise of cable and satellite TV
the convergence of broadcasting and other media
As well as discussing individual programmes and programme genres, the author
offers insights into phenomena which are closely bound up with broadcasting such
as advertising, pop music, sport, questions of artistic judgement, high and popular
culture, patterns of leisure and employment.
An Introductory History of British Broadcasting analyses the current state of
broadcasting in Britain and argues that the era of traditional broadcasting is coming
to an end. Looking to the future, Crisell discusses recent developments in satellite,
cable, information technology and telecommunications. He considers the debates
which surround the future of the BBC, audience interactivity, digitization and
globalization, access, ownership and control.
Andrew Crisell lectures in Media and Communications at the University of
Sunderland. He is the author of Understanding Radio.
