CHURCH OF SCOTLAND (second established church in UK)

a)        Separate from Anglican Church

b)       No hierarchy

c)        From the very beginning men and women could be priests

d)       Presbyterian form of Protestantism

e)       Followed Martin Luter

f)         More protestant than Anglican Church

g)        Its own organization: ALL people are equal (they are elders, but they are equal, only more experienced)

h)       Appoints its own ministers

i)         Not subject to parliamentary discussion or modification

j)         More severe form of Protestantism (stricter)

HISTORY

a)        16th century – John Knox

b)       Governed by “elders” – the same range but more experienced than others and more important

c)        Both men and women admitted to the ministry

 

FREE CHURCHES

a)        Originated after reformation

b)       Aim: to work among people

c)        All people are equal

d)       Helping people who need it

e)       Men and women can be priests

f)         Own form of religious organization

g)        No bishops or archbishops

h)       Simple services (no decoration, simple ropes)

 

THE METHODIST CHURCH

a)        18th century

b)       John Wesley – founded it

c)        1932 – Union of Methodist Churches (not all of them joined, but majority of them)

d)       Poorer areas: northern religion, Wales (social work can be done only where it is needed)

THE SALVATION ARMY  - organization

a)        William Booth – Anglican priests

b)       Preaching (wygłaszanie kazania) while doing social work

c)        Providing food, clothes

d)       Military organization (uniforms, majors, generals etc.)

THE BAPTIST CHURCH

a)        One of the oldest

b)       Most churches are grouped in association of churches

c)        Union of Baptist churches

d)       Adults are baptised – reject infant baptism

e)       Wales

 

THE UNITED REFORM CHURCH

a)        1872 – Congregational Church + some of Presbyterian churches

b)       Wales

THE QUAKERS              = THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS

a)        Do not organize services

b)       Do not have priests

c)        You can come to place (it is not church) and pray in silence

d)       17th century

e)       No ministers

f)         They refuse to serve in the armed forces (they don’t carry weapon)

ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

a)        16th century extinct

b)       19th century restored (because of immigrants and Irish people)

c)        Pope

d)       The Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster

f)         8 provinces and dioceses

g)        Catholic schools (usually boarding schools)

OTHER RELIGION COMMUNITIES:

a)        Jews

-          Orthodox – they follow all the rules (clothes, eating, hairstyle) – the Chief Rabbi

-          Liberal movement – they are Jews but they do not follow all the rules
