Rememberonlyonething:thepastisahindrance,thegreatesthindrance.Ithastobecompletely
dropped,utterlydropped.Tobewithmeistobeinthenow–nopast,nofuture.Thismomentisall
thereisandjustthismomentisgod.Everythingelseisjusttheminddreaming,desiring,imagining.
Oncethepastandfuturehavedropped–andtheyarealwaysdroppedtogether;ifyoudropone,the
otherdisappearsofitsownaccord.Theyaretwoaspectsofthesamegame.Thepastprojectsitself
intothefuture.Itwantstorepeatitself–inalittlemoremodifiedway,butstillthesame.Between
thetwoisthemoment.Themoment,thismoment,istheonlyreality,andthedoortoreality.
Soletthismomentbecomeyourwholelife.Livemomenttomoment,withnoideology,withnodesire
foranykindoffuture,withnogoal.Andthenyouneednotgotogod–godcomestoyou.
Themindisneverclearandcanneverbe.Themindiswhatunclarityis.Andallrelationshipis
throughthemind;hencetheproblem.Youwillhavetolearnthewaysofno-mindSoitisnota
questionofhowtobeclear;itisaquestionofhowtobeano-mind.Throughthemindthesame
thingwillgoonbeingrepeated,againandagain.Themindisrepetitive,itismechanical.Itmoves
likeawheel:thesamespokescomeupagainandagainandagain.
Thisisthedifferencebetweenthewesternapproachandtheeastern.Thewesternapproachisto
bringclaritytothemind.Thewholeofpsychoanalysisisnothingbutthat:howtobringaclarityto
themind.Theeasternapproachishowtogetoutofthemind,becausethemindisnotgoingtobe
clearever.Themindisconfusion.Thereisnotanypossibilitywiththemind.Itisnotthatthereare
confusedmindsandmindswhicharenotconfused,no.Allmindsareconfused...themindassuch
isconfusion.
Soitisnotaquestionofhowtobecomeclearaboutyourrelationship;thatisjustaby-product.You
havetogetoutofthemindslowly,slowly;youhavetolearnwaysofgettingoutofit.Andthat’s

whatmeditationisallabout:itisslippingoutofthemind.Themindisamechanism.Thereisno
needtogetidentifiedwithit.Useit,butremainaloof,remainseparate.Knowperfectlywellthatyou
areawitness.Justasyouareawitnessoftheoutsideworld–thetrees,themoonandthepeople
–exactlylikethatyouareawitnesstotheinsideworld–thedreams,theimagination,theanger,
love,hate,jealousy,possessiveness,andallthat.Butyouarealwaysawitness,andthewitnessis
alwaysclear.Themindisalwaysconfusion,thewitnessisalwaysclear.
Becomemoreandmoreofawitness.Don’tgetidentifiedwiththemind.Itisveryclosebutstillit
isnotyou.Sothereisnopointinworkingonthemind.Thewholeworknowhastobenotonthe
mindbutonyou.Disconnectyourselffromthemindmoreandmore.Whenangercomes,sitsilently
andwatchit.Youareawatcheronthehillsandangeristherejustlikeacloudpassingby.There
isthehateandthereisthejealousy,butyouremainaloof;youjustseethem.Don’tjudgethem,
don’tbeagainstthem,becausethemomentyoujudgeyoubecomeentangled.That’swhatJesus
meanswhenhesays’Judgeyenot’.Thatisthesecretkeytono-mind.Don’tsay’Thisisgood’,
don’tsay’Thisisbad’;justdon’tsayanything.Silentlyseeit,takenoteofit:angeristhere–itis
neutral,neithergoodnorbad.Andyouwillbesurprisedthatitcomes,itsurroundsyouandthenit
goesaway.
Onceyouhavelearnedtheknackofit–thatyoucanremainundisturbedandundistractedbythe
mindstuffthatiscontinuouslymovingliketraffic–youwillhaveclarity.Notonlyclarityaboutthis
particularproblem:youwillsimplyhaveclarity–clarityaboutyourwholelife,clarityabouteverything
thatyouaredoing.Andoutofthatclarityisbeautyandbenediction.Outofthatclarityreligionis
born.Youbecomereligiousoutofthatclarity,butitisneverofthemind.
Devameansdivine,vatulameansmadness,divinemadness.Therearetwokindsofmadness,and
sometimestheylookverysimilarbuttheyarediametricallyopposite,notsimilaratall.Theyexistin
twodifferentdimensions,theyaretwodifferentrealities.
Thefirstmadnessisakindofbreakdownandthesecondmadnessisakindofbreakthrough.The
firstmadnesshappensifyoubecometooidentifiedwiththemindandthereasoningprocesses.If
yougotoomuchintothemind–ithasalimit–ifyoustretchittoomuch,soonerorlaterthelimit
isarrivedat;youcannotgobeyondit.Thenthepressuregoesonaccumulatingandaccumulating
anditexplodes.Onefallsbelowmind.Thatistheordinarymadness.
Ithappensthroughtheidentificationwiththemind;itisafailureofthenerves.Youtriedtodo
somethingimpossiblewiththemind,somethingwhichitisnotmadetodo.Youpulledittoitslogical
endandtherewasnowaytogobeyondit.Youdestroyedit.That’swhathappenedtoFriedrich
Nietzsche:itwasabreakdown.Hetriedhard.Hebecameutterlyonewiththemind.Hiswhole
approachtowardslifeandexistencewasofreasonandonlyreason.Reasoncantakeyoutoa
certainpoint–beyondthatthereisnowayforreason.Ifyoustillinsist,itwillbreakdown,itwillnot
beabletocontainthebeyond.
ThenthereisanotherkindofmadnessIcall’thedivinemadness’.IthappenedtoGautamthe
BuddhaandtoJesusChrist.Ithappenswhenyoudon’tgetidentifiedwiththemind,whenyoudon’t
thinkofyourselfasthemindbutasawitness,asawatcher.Andwhenonewatchesthemind,slowly
slowlyonegoesbeyondthemind.Intheverywatching,thetranscendence.Whenyougobeyond
themind,thatisthebreakthrough;thatiswhatIcall’divinemadness’.Inordinarymadnessyougo

belowmind;indivinemadnessyougobeyondmind.Fromtheoutsidesometimestheycanappear
similar.That’swhatpsychoanalystsgoonsuspecting–thatJesusisalittlebitneurotic.Heisnot:
theyare!
Mywholeefforthere,mywholeworkhere,consistsinleadingyoutowardsthatbreakthrough.
Theworldisleadingyoutowardsabreakdown.Thewholeprocess,pressures,thewholemodern
speed,thewholetension,theanguishoflifeandthemeaninglessofit,isdrivingyoutowardsa
breakdown.Onlymediocreswillsurvive,onlystupidpeoplewillsurvive.Thosewhohavesensitive
souls,thosewhohavesomeintelligence,willallgomad.Onlyidiotswillnotgomad.Andthis
modernmindisoneofthemostintelligentmindsever.Hencemadnessisincreasing.Suicideis
increasing,mm?becausethelimitcomesandyoudon’tknowwhattodonow;everythingstarts
fallingapart.
Sannyasmeanslearningthealchemy,theartofchangingbreakdownsintobreakthroughs.Iama
madman’sguidetoenlightenment!

Andthisisjustabeginning:muchmoreisgoingtohappen.Nowitwillnotmakeanydifference
whetheryouarehereorfarawayfromme–Iwillbeclosetoyou.Youhavebeenabletoreceiveme
atthedeepestcoreofyourbeing.Youareconnectednow.Andmanythingswillhappen;don’tbe
frightened.
Sometimesthosethingswilllookbizarrejustbecausetheyareunfamiliar,justbecausethemind
cannotcomprehendthem,justbecausetheyarebeyondthemind.Lovinglywelcomethem,with
afearlessheartreceivethem.Thisishowonegetsreadyslowlyslowlyfortheultimate,because
theultimateisaquantumleap.Theexperienceoftheultimatemeansadeathexperienceanda
resurrectiontoo.Ontheonehandonediescompletely;ontheotherhandoneisreborn,bornagain.
That’swhatJesusmeanswhenhesaystoNicodemus:’Unlessyouarebornagain,youwillnotbe
abletoenterthekingdomofgod.’
Buttheprocesshasstarted,theprocessofrebirth.Helpit,cooperatewithit,imbibeit;givemore
andmoretimetoit.Anddon’tbedistractedbytheworld.Thereareathousandandonedistractions
andtemptations,veryalluring.Whenoneisonthepathonehastobemorealertnottobedistracted
sideways–andIwillkeepaneyeonyou!

becauseofthemeditations...butbecauseofyou.]
Don’tbeworried...youneednotworryaboutit.Letithappen:letithappenthroughthegroup,letit
happenthroughthemeditation–finallyyouwillseethatithashappenedthroughme.Iamhiding
behindmanythings,mm?Tofacemedirectlycanbetoomuch,sotheseareallcurtains.Slowly
slowlyyoubecomeabletodigestmeandthenonedayallcurtainsdisappearandyouarefacing
me.
Itisakindofhurdlerace,mm?Allthesegroupsarejusthurdles...buttheybringyouclosertome.
Youhavejumpedonehurdle,youarealittleclosertome.Andnaturallywhenyouaredoingagroup

andsomethinghappens,youwillthinkthatithashappenedbecauseofthegroup...andnothingis
wronginit.Thewholestorywillbeknownonlyintheend.Becausethenyoucanhavealookatthe
pastandyoucansuddenlyseethateverythingfallsintoacertainpattern,intoacertaingestalt,into
acertainsystem.Butthatwillhappenonlyintheend,anditisgoodthatithappensintheend.Itis
allplannedthatway.
Isendyoutothegroups,tothemeditations,andIkeepmyselfhidden.Imakeitalmostimpossible
foryoutofindmeeasily,toseemeeasily.Therearethingswhichcanbedoneonlyindirectly.A
directassaultmaybetoomuch;youmayescape,youmaynevercomeback.SoIhavetobevery
indirect,subtle,persuasive.Slowly,slowly,themoreyougetready,themoreIcancomecloseto
you....
Anandmeansblissandpushkarameansabluelotus–abluelotusofbliss.
Blisshassomethingtodowiththelotusandalsosomethingtodowiththecolourblue.Hence
thebluelotus,’pushkara’,hasbecomeasymbolofenlightenment.Whenapersoncomestothe
ultimatepeakofhisawareness,itisakindofbluelightthatspreadsalloverhisbeing,averyvery
softlight.Oneisbathedinit.Andnotonlythatitisinside,itstartsspreadingoutside.Themanof
enlightenmentseestheworldascompletelybaskinginbluelight–averysoftbluelight,justasthe
softsky.
Anditisakindofflowering:whenyoumovetothehighestpeakofyourbeing,italmostlooksasifa
lotushasbloomed.ThelotusisthebiggestflowerintheEastorinthewholeworld.Thisbloomingof
yourconsciousnessinsideisasifitisaone-thousand-petalledlotus.Itissimpleandyetmysterious;
itisinnocentbutwisdomarisesoutofit.
SoPushkaraisoneofthemostbeautifulnamesonecanget.Makeitapointthatithastobe
realised.Thesearemyhopesforyou–theyhavetobefulfilled.Thesearemydreamsaboutyou–
ifyoucooperate,theywillbecomerealities....
