Due to the success of the first editions of this book I have
been asked on numerous occasions to update and expand on the
information in it.With the recent introduction of two new kata to
theZNKRcurriculumandchangesingradingrequirementsthetime
nowseemsrighttodoso.Thisneweditiondrawsheavilyonthefirst
andsecond.InformationconceningKoryuhasnotbeenchanged,but
appendices have been brought up to date, the descriptions of Zen
KenRenkatahavebeenrevisedandexpandedwithphotographsto
assistininterpretingthedescriptions.Alsothefirstchapter,particularly
that concerning ettiquette has been considerably enlarged, with
photographsoftorei,anddrawingsofmethodsoffoldingHakama,
tyingobietc.Explanationsoftermshavebeenexpandedtoo.
Thedecisiontoincludephotographswasmadeunderpressure
fromtheconsiderablenumberofpeoplewhoaskedfortheminthis
edition.Iamnotconvincedthatitisagoodidea.Photographsaretoo
fixed,donotchangewithmychanginginterpretationandincreased
learning.Theygetoutofdateevenfasterthanabriefdescription.I
knowIwilllookatacopyofthisin10yearstimeandbeembarrassed,
andwonderwhyIeverallowedit.Butfornow,Ihaveincludedwhat
usersseemtowant.
The previous issues were spiral bound. There have been
numerousrequeststomakethisissuemoreflexible.Thereforewhat
youhavenowispunchedforbindinginvariousmethods.Thenew
editionallowsyoutodispersethepageamongstyourownnotes,or
addyourownnotestothebook.Pagescanbeeasilyremovedand
replacedforstudy,photocopiedforannotationswithoutspoilingthe
original,etc.
Included with this edition is an order form for obtaining an
optionalCDROMversionofthebook.Thediskcontainsthebook
exactlyasyouseeithere,ininteractivepdfformatforeasyreference
onyourcomputer,whiletheprintedcopycanremainhandyinyour
kitbagforreferenceatthedojo.

Manymodernsystemsofeducationdevelopwaysforpeopleto
broadentheirmindsandexplorethevariedfieldsofart,scienceand
technology.However,traininginIaidosharpensthefacilitytobelieve
inoneselfandatthesametimeactivatesthewillingnesstoseekforthe
highestpersonalideals.Accordingly,thestudyofIaidohasbecome
theobjectofrapidlyincreasinginternationalinterestasavaluableway
ofdevelopingspiritualstrengthandphysicalpower.Thoughoriginally
developedinJapan,Iaidohasbecomepartoftheculturalheritageof
thewholeworldanditismysincerehopethatthisbookwillserveas
ausefulguidetoboththebeginnerandtheexperiencedpractitioner
intheirsearchforknowledge.

The term ‘Iai’ is taken from the phrase ‘Tsune ni itte, kyu ni
awasu’.Themeaningofthisis,whateverwemaybedoingorwherever
wemaybe,wemustalwaysbepreparedforanyeventuality.
Throughtheswordweseektoimproveourspiritandbecome
betterpeople,topromotepeaceandgoodfeelingbeyondthewallsof
theDojoandintoourdailylives.TherearemanystylesofIai,many
waystocut,tomove,andasonelearnsoneimprovestechnically.
However,wetrainnotonlytolearntechniques,butalsotocultivate
theheartandspirit,andinthisrespectall‘styles’leadtothesame
goal.
Onemustbearinmindthehighergoalstoachieveandtake
eachstepandovercomeeachobstacle,butatthesametime,though
thepathmaybeadifficultonetofollow,onemustrelishandenjoy
thechallenges.
