Adverbs of manner

Kinds of adverbs:

of manner

of time

of place

of frequency

of degree

 

There are three some main positions for adverbs; Front –beginning of a sentence; mid – after the first auxiliary, end- at the en of a sentence.

 

  • Adverbs of manner can go in the mid or end position.
  • Adverbs of place and time, usually go in end position.
  • Adverbs of frequency generally go in the mid position.
  • Most adverbs of degree go in mid position.
  • Others go at the end of a sentence when they describe a verb: much, lot, a little, terribly….

 


Adverbs of manner

 

Adverbs of manner tell you how something happens or how somebody does something.

 

Rule:

 Adverbs of manner are usually formed:

                  ADJECTIVE + LY

         E.g.: The music played loudly

 

Note: Adjectives ending in -y change the -y into a -i when you add -ly.

E.g.: easy → easily

 

Exceptions:

3. Write sentences following the example:

Adverbs of time

 

· Yesterday              · Today              · Tomorrow

 

 · Last / this              · now                            · at the moment ...

This adverbs are usually used at the beginning of the sentence.

 

Example: Yesterday I went to the beach.

 

 

Adverbs of place

 

· here              · there              · everywhere              · somewhere

· anywhere (negative sentences).

 

These adverbs are usually used after the verb.

 

Example: The books are here.

 

 

 

Adverbs of degree

 

· A lot                            · Quite                            · Very

 

 

These adverbs modify adjectives or adverbs.

 

These adverbs are usually used before the word they modify, except for “a lot”.

E.g: The book is very good.

I like Ice-cream a lot.
