“I have no lucky numbers.”
Although Bond is famous for his baccarat playing, his current
game of choice is No Limit Texas Hold’em.
It would be a waste of digital space for me to explain the rules
and basic theory behind the game so here’s a link to the
Wikipedia page for those who need it:
Play the man, not the cards
Whether at the table or in the grips of a super villain like
Goldfinger, Bond is always playing the man, not the cards.
Meaning, it doesn’t matter what cards Bond is holding (or
information in the case of the code name “Operation Grandslam”
with Goldfinger), because he is focused on gaining the upper
hand by playing against someone else’s personality or interests.
In a casino gambling situation this means reading people’s tells.
Tells are subtle clues others give to the value or content of their
hands.
Common Tells In Poker
Freezing Up Before Raising
Tell: You notice a player sneak a look at his hole cards. He pushes
the cards slightly away from himself, but not too far, places his
hands on the rail of the table and goes completely motionless.
Explanation: He likely has a good hand and he doesn’t want to
draw attention to himself so he stays very still.
Exaggerated Disinterest

Tell: Rather than freeze up, the player rests his chin on his hands,
or looks away from the table, or in someway suggests that he has
no interest in the hand.
Explanation: He has a good hand and is exaggerating his
disinterest. This is often easier to spot than the freeze up.
Immediately Grabbing Chips
Tell: The player across from you looks at his cards and
immediately picks up his chips.
Explanation: A lot of inexperienced players will do this. He might
have a good hand. Tread carefully.
Premature Folding
Tell: This is related to exaggerated disinterest. The player looks at
his cards and then changes his grip so that he can flick the cards
away and fold more easily. His attention then wanders to other
things in the room.
Explanation: This player is most likely very passive. The
aggressive player tries to steal pots when possible. This player
probably also has other more easily readable tells.
Glancing At Chips After The Flop
Tell: The big blind glances at his chips, or reaches for them, but
then decides to check the bet.
Explanation: He wanted to bet but held up after thinking about it.
He might have a draw or low two pair.
Looking Away After The Flop

Tell: Your opponent sees the flop, looks away, puts a disdainful
look on his face, and checks the bet.
Explanation: He likely made good on the flop and is trying to
conceal it by looking away.
Sitting Up Straight And Betting On The Turn Or River
Tell: When the turn or river comes with a scary card (for ex. 3
spades on the board indicating a possible flush), your opponent
who’d been check/calling, sits up straight, looks you in the eye,
and bets.
Explanation: He likely has a terrible hand. Most players who hit a
flush draw here will spend a few seconds considering whether
they should bet or try to check-raise. His exaggerated motions
probably mean he’s weak but wants to appear strong.
Slumping On A Possible Draw
Tell: You notice your opponent slump subtly after the flop, turn,
or river.
Explanation: He’s likely missed a draw of some sort and he’s
disappointed.
Betting Out Of Turn
Tell: A player pushes his bet forward out of turn then rescinds it
and apologizes.
Explanation: If it’s an inexperienced player he almost certainly
has a good hand.
Talking To The Bettor

Tell: Before you bet, your opponent says something like, “Are you
sure you want to bet that?”
Explanation: He has a weak hand or a draw and he wants to see
another card. He hopes to intimidate you into a check.
Talking You Into Calling
Tell: Your opponent smiles at you, taunts you, and says, “You
can’t call here,” or “fold and save your chips.”
Explanation: He wants you do the exact opposite of what he’s
telling you. Do the opposite of what he wants you to do and fold.
Trembling Hands
Tell: Your opponents hands begin to tremble.
Explanation: If his hands normally tremble you’re not on to
anything. But if he normally doesn’t tread carefully. He likely has
something big.
Shaking Leg
Tell: An opponents leg seems to bounce up and down on different
hands. You see him win a couple hands with good cards, but
during these hands his legs were completely still.
Explanation: He likely shakes his legs when he’s nervous and
bluffing.
