Don’t say a word
Language Aims:
To practise and revise vocabulary or
structures.
Time:
10 minutes
Preparation:
Write e.g. ten animals, ten jobs, ten fruits …
on separate pieces of card. Make one set for
each group of students (no more than 5
players!)
Procedure:
1.
Divide the class into groups of 4
2.
When you say Start! student A takes one
card and has 40 seconds to draw the word
on a sheet of paper. Student A mustn’t
speak or use any words or letters in the
drawing.
3.
The other members of the group have to
try and guess the word.
4.
After 40 seconds shout Stop ! Ask each
group if they guessed the word correctly
and give them one point if they did.
5.
Student B takes a new card and the game
continues.
Variation
Let the students play this game in their
group. Student A starts with turning around a
card and s/he draws the word on a sheet of
paper. The student that first calls out the
right word, gets one point. Student B takes
the next card and so on.
The last letter game
Language Aims:
To practise known vocabulary.
Time:
10 minutes
Preparation:
none

Procedure:
1. One student says a word (e.g. twenty) and
the next student has to quickly say a word
using the last letter of that word (e.g.
yellow). The next student goes on with
using the last letter of this word (e.g.
wall) and so on.
2.
Stop the time that each group needs to
get through. The group with the best time
gets a point.
3.
Words can’t be used again.
Chinese Whisper
Language Aims:
To practise and revise words and structures,
spelling, listening. The object of the game is
to correctly pass a message orally round a
class from student to student.
Time:
10 minutes
Preparation:
none
Procedure:
The students should line up in groups (not
more than three groups).
2. Tell them a short sentence in bits (one
word after another). Give the words to the
last student in the row.
3.
This students whispers the word in his/her
frontman’s ear. S/he passes the word on,
… the first student writes the words s/he
gets on the board.
4.
The group that finishes first stops the
game.

The Alphabet Game
Language Aims:
To practise the alphabet and check the
vocabulary
Time:
10 minutes
Preparation:
None
Procedure:
1.
Divide Students into groups of five ( it
depends on the number of students you
have) and ask them to stand in line.
2.
The students of the front get a chalk to
write on the blackboard.
3.
Then draw with your finger an imaginary
letter of the alphabet on the back of the
students at the end of the line.
4.
They must do the same with the student in
front of him/her and so on.
5.
The students with the marker are
supposed to run to the board and write
any word that begins with that letter.
ABC Game
Language Aims:
To revise vocabulary
Time:
10 minutes
Preparation:
none
Procedure:
1.
Divide students into two groups and tell
them to line up.
2.
Call out a letter.
3.
The student that first calls out a word
starting with this letter is allowed to move
on to the end of the row.
4.
Go on with randomly calling out letters of

the alphabet.
5.
The group wins when their first player
has reached the front again.
6.
Words can’t be used more than one time.
Spelling game
Language Aims:
To train vocabulary, spelling and listening
Time:
10 minutes
Preparation:
None
Procedure:
1. Divide your students into 3 groups and let
them line up.
Start spelling words in your usual talking
speed. Repeat it until one group calls out
the right answer.
3. This group gets a point and the game goes
on.
Variation
1.
Divide your students into groups of four.
Start spelling words.
3. The students should write them down.
4.
Check the answers and the group with the
most correct answers is the winner.

To practise learned vocabulary/ to train
dictionary skills
Time:

Preparation:
None
Procedure:
1. Tell your students to write down as many
things as they can think of which are ....
(choose one: round/smaller than a
CD/beautiful/dangerous etc.)
2 minutes - students brainstorm alone
3. The student with the most words gets a
point.
4.
You may collect words on the board.
Picking up the pieces
Language Aims:
To practise word order und reading skills
Time:
~10 minutes
Preparation:
Cut up story/conversation or text you want to
use
Procedure:
1.
Tell your students when you say Now!
they should put it in the correct order.
2.
The student that can read the complete
story in the correct order is the winner.
Variation
Jumbled sentences ë Mix up the order of
words in a sentence. Students should unravel
them and put them in the correct order
