Editor's Foreword
This renowned work by Jan Timman was irst published in 1980 by RHM, but
never reprinted in English due to the subsequent collapse of the publisher.
A second, updated edition was published in 1993, but this apered only in
Dutch. The crrent edition includes all the new nalysis which appeed in the
1993 edition, together with some further minor corections.
The t of Chess Analysis remains one of the best exmples of painstaking
analytical work ever written. It is vey unusual for a leading player such s Jan
Timman to take on the diicult task of giving detailed annotations to the games of
other players. He has succeeded magniicently. The book is prticulrly insuc­
tive in that Timman not only gives deailed analysis when required, but also cov­
ers the plans and counterplans available to both sides, illuminating many of the
general principles govening chess strategy.
