Definicja
Podobnie jak w języku polskim tak i w języku angielskim zdania występują w tzw. stronie czynnej (active voice) oraz stronie biernej (passive voice). Większość zdań tworzymy w sposób naturalny w stronie czynnej i są to po prostu zwykłe zdania bez żadnych dodatkowych konstrukcji. Przy przekształceniu strony czynnej na stronę bierną dokonujemy zamiany podmiotu i dopełnienia zdania. Innymi słowy dopełnienie staje się podmiotem a podmiot dopełnieniem.
Przykładowo:
· My father built this house. [Mój ojciec zbudował ten dom] - Strona czynna.
· This house was built by my father. [Ten dom został zbudowany przez mojego ojca] - Strona bierna.
Jak widać, w powyższych przykładach dopełnienie zdania (dom) zajmuje miejsce podmiotu (ojca) i vice versa. W ten sposób przekształcać się będzie wszystkie zdania ze strony czynnej na stronę bierną.
Czas Present Simple
Podmiot + to be + III-cia forma czasownika
Zdania w czasie Present Simple po przekształceniu na stronę bierną skonstruowane są za pomocą czasownika w III-ciej formie (past participle) poprzedzonego czasownikiem posiłkowym to be. Oczywiście miejce podmiotu zajmuje dopełnienie. W stornie biernej dopełnienie często nie występuje gdyż interesuje nas przede wszystkim sama czynność a nie jej wykonawca.
Przykładowe przekształcenia.
· My mother washes the dishes everyday. -> The dishes are washed everyday by my mother. [Moja matka zmywa codziennie naczynia -> Naczynia są codziennie zmywane przez moją matkę]
· We give her flowers every Friday -> She is given flowers every Friday [Dajemy jej kwiaty w każdy piątek -> Ona dostaje kwiaty w każdy piątek]
Czas Past Simple
Podmiot + was/were + III-cia forma czasownika
Zdania w czasie Past Simple przekształcamy do zdań, w których po podmiocie umieszczamy czasownik posiłkowy to be w formie przeszłej (was/were) a czasownik główny jest w formie past participle.
Przykładowe przekształcenia:
· His boss asked him to do it. -> He was asked to do it. [Jego szef poprosił go, żeby to zrobił -> (On) został poproszony o zrobienie tego (przez szefa).]
· They were stopped by the police. -> The police stopped them. [Zostali zatrzymani przez policję -> policja ich zatrzymała]
