Practising alphabetical order
A Work as a class and put yourselves in a line in the alphabetical order of your family names.
Then do the same for your first names.
B You have one minute to put this list of words into alphabetical order.

C Now do the same with this list.

D Organize the list of words into these four groups according to their first letter.

Finding words and their meanings
E You can use the CD-ROM to find words and phrases by typing in just a part of the word.
1 Type 'feng' and find the name of a Chinese system of organising furniture in a house
2 Type 'shamr' and find the name of a small green plant
3 Type 'aar' to find the name of a large animal from southern Africa
F Type 'lawn' and look at the choices that come up. Click on them until you find the
name of a machine that cuts the grass.
G Use the same procedure to do the following:
1 Type 'Smith' and find the name of a group of museums
2 Type 'Dra' and find the name of a monster
3 Type 'gau' to find the name of a South American cowboy
Pronunciation
H Look up the word tomato and click on the loudspeaker button. Play both the British and American
pronunciations of the word. Listen to the 'a' sound.
Which 'a' sound is like the long 'a' in play or stay ?
I Now follow the same procedure and listen to the British and American pronunciations
of potato . Is the 'a' sound in this word short or long in the two versions?

Aim: To train students in using dictionaries and also to show students how to use the CD-ROM
Timing: Approximately 60 minutes
Procedure:
A Ask your students to write their first and last names on a piece of paper and hold it up in front of them.
B answers: breakfast, dinner, evening, lunch, morning, night
C answers: silence, sleep, snore, starter, stop, sugar
D answers:
A-E breakdown, cool, exist
F-L giant
M-R northern, nutcracker, orange, petrol, quip
S-Z theatre, willow, yellow
E Type the letters into the type-in box:
Scroll through the words using the arrows
answers: 1 feng shui 2 shamrock 3 aardvark
F answer: lawnmower
G answers: 1 Smithsonian 2 Dracula 3 gaucho
H answer: The American pronunciation
I answers: Both use the long 'a' sound: / eI /
J Explain that the Longman Language Activator is a special kind of dictionary that arranges words
according to their meaning instead of alphabetically. This helps your students learn groups of words
meaning roughly the same thing.
