The Book of the Law
Chapter I
1. Had! The m anifestation of Nuit.
2. The unveiling of the com pany of heaven.
3. Every m an and every w om an is a star.
4. Every num ber is infinite; there is no difference.
5. Help m e, o w arrior lord of Thebes, in m y unveiling before the Children of m en!
6. Be thou Hadit, m y secret centre, m y heart & m y tongue!
7. Behold! it is revealed by Aiw ass the m inister of Hoor-paar-kraat.
8. The Khabs is in the Khu, not the Khu in the Khabs.
9. W orship then the Khabs, and behold m y light shed over you!
10. Let m y servants be few & secret: they shall rule the m any & the know n.
11. These are fools that m en adore; both their G ods & their m en are fools.
12. Com e forth, o children, under the stars, & take your fill of love!
13. I am above you and in you. M y ecstasy is in yours. M y joy is to see your joy.
14. Above, the gem m ed azure is
The naked splendour of Nuit;
She bends in ecstasy to kiss
The secret ardours of Hadit.
The w inged globe, the starry blue,
Are m ine, O Ankh-af-na-khonsu!
15. Now ye shall know that the chosen priest & apostle of infinite space is the prince-priest the Beast;
and in his w om an called the Scarlet W om an is all pow er
given. They shall gather m y children into their fold: they shall bring the glory of the stars into the
hearts of m en.
16. For he is ever a sun, and she a m oon. But to him is the w inged secret flam e, and to her the
stooping starlight.
17. But ye are not so chosen.
18. Burn upon their brow s, o splendrous serpent!
19. O azure-lidded w om an, bend upon them !

20. The key of the rituals is in the secret w ord w hich I have given unto him .
21. W ith the G od & the Adorer I am nothing: they do not see m e. They are as upon the earth; I am
Heaven, and there is no other G od than m e, and m y lord Hadit.
22. Now , therefore, I am know n to ye by m y nam e Nuit, and to him by a secret nam e w hich I w ill give
him w hen at last he know eth m e. Since I am Infinite Space, and the Infinite Stars thereof, do ye also
thus. Bind nothing! Let there be no difference m ade am ong you betw een any one thing & any other
thing; for thereby there com eth hurt.
23. But w hoso availeth in this, let him be the chief of all!
24. I am Nuit, and m y w ord is six and fifty.
25. Divide, add, m ultiply, and understand.
26. Then saith the prophet and slave of the beauteous one: W ho am I, and w hat shall be the sign? So
she answ ered him , bendingdow n, a lam bent flam e of blue, all-touching, all penetrant, her lovely hands
upon the black earth, & her lithe body arched for love, and her soft feet not hurting the little flow ers:
Thou know est! And the sign shall be m y ecstasy, the consciousness of the continuity of existence, the
om nipresence of m y body.
27. Then the priest answ ered & said unto the Q ueen of Space, kissing her lovely brow s, and the dew of
her light bathing his w hole body in a sw eet-sm elling perfum e of sw eat: O Nuit, continuous one of
Heaven, let it be ever thus; that m en speak not of Thee as O ne but as None; and let them speak not of
thee at all, since thou art continuous!
28. None, breathed the light, faint & faery, of the stars, and tw o.
29. For I am divided for loves sake, for the chance of union.
30. This is the creation of the w orld, that the pain of division is as nothing, and the joy of dissolution
all.
31. For these fools of m en and their w oes care not thou at all! They feel little; w hat is, is balanced by
w eak joys; but ye are m y chosen ones.
32. O bey m y prophet! follow out the ordeals of m y know ledge! seek m e only! Then the joys of m y love
w ill redeem ye from all pain. This is so: I sw ear it by the vault of m y body; by m y sacred heart and
tongue; by all I can give, by all I desire of ye all.
33. Then the priest fell into a deep trance or sw oon, & said unto the Q ueen of Heaven; W rite unto us
the ordeals; w rite unto us the rituals; w rite unto us the law !
34. But she said: the ordeals I w rite not: the rituals shall be half know n and half concealed: the Law is
for all.
35. This that thou w ritest is the threefold book of Law .
36. M y scribe Ankh-af-na-khonsu, the priest of the princes, shall not in one letter change this book; but
lest there be folly, he shall com m ent thereupon by the w isdom of Ra-Hoor-Khuit.
37. Also the m antras and spells; the obeah and the w anga; the w ork of the w and and the w ork of the
sw ord; these he shall learn and teach.
38. He m ust teach; but he m ay m ake severe the ordeals.

39. The w ord of the Law is THELEM A.
40. W ho calls us Thelem ites w ill do no w rong, if he look but close into the w ord. For there are therein
Three G rades, the Herm it, and the Lover, and the m an of Earth. Do w hat thou w ilt shall be the w hole
of the Law .
41. The w ord of Sin is Restriction. O m an! refuse not thy w ife, if she w ill! O lover, if thou w ilt, depart!
There is no bond that can unite the divided but love: all else is a curse. Accursed! Accursed be it to the
aeons! Hell.
42. Let it be that state of m anyhood bound and loathing. So w ith thy all; thou hast no right but to do
thy w ill.
43. Do that, and no other shall say nay.
44. For pure w ill, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result, is every w ay perfect.
45. The Perfect and the Perfect are one Perfect and not tw o; nay, are none!
46. Nothing is a secret key of this law . Sixty-one the Jew s call it; I call it eight, eighty, four hundred &
eighteen.
47. But they have the half: unite by thine art so that all disappear.
48. M y prophet is a fool w ith his one, one, one; are not they the O x, and none by the Book?
49. Abrogate are all rituals, all ordeals, all w ords and signs. Ra-Hoor-Khuit hath taken his seat in the
East at the Equinox of the G ods; and let Asar be w ith Isa, w ho also are one. But they are not of m e. Let
Asar be the adorant, Isa the sufferer; Hoor in his secret nam e and splendour is the Lord initiating.
50. There is a w ord to say about the Hierophantic task. Behold! there are three ordeals in one, and it
m ay be given in three w ays. The gross m ust pass through fire; let the fine be tried in intellect, and the
lofty chosen ones in the highest. Thus ye have star & star, system & system ; let not one know w ell the
other!
51. There are four gates to one palace; the floor of that palace is of silver and gold; lapis lazuli &
jasper are there; and all rare scents; jasm ine & rose, and the em blem s of death. Let him enter in turn
or at once the four gates; let him stand on the floor of the palace. W ill he not sink? Am n. Ho! w arrior,
if thy servant sink? But there are m eans and m eans. Be goodly therefore: dress ye all in fine apparel;
eat rich foods and drink sw eet w ines and w ines that foam ! Also, take your fill and w ill of love as ye
w ill, w hen, w here and w ith w hom ye w ill! But alw ays unto m e.
52. If this be not aright; if ye confound the space-m arks, saying: They are one; or saying, They are
m any; if the ritual be not ever unto m e: then expect the direful judgm ents of Ra Hoor Khuit!
53. This shall regenerate the w orld, the little w orld m y sister, m y heart & m y tongue, unto w hom I
send this kiss. Also, o scribe and prophet, though thou be of the princes, it shall not assuage thee nor
absolve thee. But ecstasy be thine and joy of earth: ever To m e! To m e!
54. Change not as m uch as the style of a letter; for behold! thou, o prophet, shalt not behold all these
m ysteries hidden therein.
55. The child of thy bow els, he shall behold them .
56. Expect him not from the East, nor from the W est; for from no expected house com eth that child.
Aum ! All w ords are sacred and all prophets true; save only that they understand a little; solve the first

half of the equation, leave the second unattacked. But thou hast all in the clear light, and som e,
though not all, in the dark.
57. Invoke m e under m y stars! Love is the law , love under w ill. Nor let the fools m istake love; for there
are love and love. There is the dove, and there is the serpent. Choose ye w ell! He, m y prophet, hath
chosen, know ing the law of the fortress, and the great m ystery of the House of G od.
All these old letters of m y Book are aright; but [Tzaddi] is not the Star. This also is secret: m y prophet
shall reveal it to the w ise.
58. I give unim aginable joys on earth: certainty, not faith, w hile in life, upon death; peace
unutterable, rest, ecstasy; nor do I dem and aught in sacrifice.
59. M y incense is of resinous w oods & gum s; and there is no blood therein: because of m y hair the trees
of Eternity.
60. M y num ber is 11, as all their num bers w ho are of us. The Five Pointed Star, w ith a Circle in the
M iddle, & the circle is Red. M y colour is black to the blind, but the blue & gold are seen of the seeing.
Also I have asecret glory for them that love m e.
61. But to love m e is better than all things: if under the night stars in the desert thou presently burnest
m ine incense before m e, invoking m e w ith a pure heart, and the Serpent flam e therein, thou shalt
com e a little to lie in m y bosom . For one kiss w ilt thou then be w illing to give all; but w hoso gives one
particle of dust shall lose all in that hour. Ye shall gather goods and store of w om en and spices; ye shall
w ear rich jew els; ye shall exceed the nations of the earth in spendour & pride; but alw ays in the love
of m e, and so shall ye com e to m y joy. I charge you earnestly to com e before m e in a single robe, and
covered w ith a rich headdress. I love you! I yearn to you! Pale or purple, veiled or voluptuous, I w ho
am all pleasure and purple, and drunkenness of the innerm ost sense, desire you. Put on the w ings, and
arouse the coiled splendour w ithin you: com e unto m e!
62. At all m y m eetings w ith you shall the priestess say -- and her eyes shall burn w ith desire as she
stands bare and rejoicing in m y secret tem ple -- To m e! To m e! calling forth the flam e of the hearts of
all in her love-chant.
63. Sing the rapturous love-song unto m e! Burn to m e perfum es! W ear to m e jew els! Drink to m e, for I
love you! I love you!
64. I am the blue-lidded daughter of Sunset; I am the naked brilliance of the voluptuous night-sky.
65. To m e! To m e!
66. The M anifestation of Nuit is at an end.

Chapter II
1. Nu! the hiding of Hadit.
2. Com e! all ye, and learn the secret that hath not yet been revealed. I, Hadit, am the com plem ent of
Nu, m y bride. I am not extended, and Khabs is the nam e of m y House.
3. In the sphere I am everyw here the centre, as she, the circum ference, is now here found.
4. Yet she shall be know n & I never.
5. Behold! the rituals of the old tim e are black. Let the evil ones be cast aw ay; let the good ones be
purged by the prophet! Then shall this Know ledge go aright.
6. I am the flam e that burns in every heart of m an, and in the core of every star. I am Life, and the
giver of Life, yet therefore is theknow ledge of m e the know ledge of death.
7. I am the M agician and the Exorcist. I am the axle of the w heel, and the cube in the circle. "Com e
unto m e" is a foolish w ord: for it is I that go.
8. W ho w orshipped Heru-pa-kraath have w orshipped m e; ill, for I am the w orshipper.
9. Rem em ber all ye that existence is pure joy; that all the sorrow s are but as shadow s; they pass & are
done; but there is that w hich rem ains.
10. O prophet! thou hast ill w ill to learn this w riting.
11. I see thee hate the hand & the pen; but I am stronger.
12. Because of m e in Thee w hich thou knew est not.
13. for w hy? Because thou w ast the know er, and m e.
14. Now let there be a veiling of this shrine: now let the light devour m en and eat them up w ith
blindness!
15. For I am perfect, being Not; and m y num ber is nine by the fools; but w ith the just I am eight, and
one in eight: W hich is vital, for I am none indeed. The Em press and the King are not of m e; for there is
a further secret.
16. I am The Em press & the Hierophant. Thus eleven, as m y bride is eleven.
17. Hear m e, ye people of sighing!
The sorrow s of pain and regret
Are left to the dead and the dying,
The folk that not know m e as yet.
18. These are dead, these fellow s; they feel not. W e are not for the poor and sad: the lords of the
earth are our kinsfolk.
19. Is a G od to live in a dog? No! but the highest are of us. They shall rejoice, our chosen: w ho
sorrow eth is not of us.
20. Beauty and strength, leaping laughter and delicious languor, force and fire, are of us.
