Course:  TRIAGE (Together, Ready, Initiate, Activate, Go, Evaluate) Training

 

Objectives:  Upon Completion of the course the requesting facility (agency) can demonstrate effective triage practices of multiple patients both pre-hospital and hospital, describe and demonstrate effective pre-hospital, intra and inter hospital command, control and communications activities during a multiple casualty incidentThe emphasis for this particular course will be triage of patients with “traumatic injuries”.

 

Lesson Plan:

 

  1. Introduction: Types of Multiple Casualty Incidents

·         Traumatic Injuries

·         Acute Medical (Jonestown, CO poisoning, etc.)

·         Biological (Acute Infectious Disease Outbreak – SARS, Pan Flu, etc.)

 

      2.              Implementing the Communications Plan

·         Dispatch procedures – responder notification

·         Hospital notification ?

·         Scene/Hospital communications

·         Inter Hospital communications

 

3.      Establish the pre-hospital and/or hospital command

·         Making initial contact – Scene Size-Up, Safety, PPE

·         Assume/ Announce Command,

·         Request personnel and equipment

·         Location, Access and Positioning

·         Assign/Stage/Allocate Resources

·         Plan for Demobilization

 

4.      Define a pre-hospital and/or hospital command structure and assign roles and responsibilities:

·         Key Principles of NIMS ICS

      1. Span of Control
      2. Unity of Command
      3. Accountability

·         Key Roles in an MCI

      1. IC
      2. Medical Branch Director (if needed)
      3. Triage Group Supervisor
      4. Treatment Group Supervisor
      5. Transport/Transfer Supervisor

 

5.      Mobilization of resources: How do you get them?

Ambulances

·         Ground

·         Air

Personnel

·         Medical

·         Support

Medical Equipment – Regional, State, Federal (VMI, SNS)

 

6.              Assessment and care of multiple patients On-Scene and at Hospital:

·         Triage

·         Treatment

·         Transport/Transfer

 

7.              Specific training relevant to the planned scenario

 

Demonstrate integration of previous objectives with team participation in mock Mass Casualty scenario(s):

o       Location/Resource Map

o       Mock Triage of Patient cards

o       Mock communications

o       Mock deployment of resources

o       Mock transfer of patients

 

Strategies:  Slides, Lectures, Handouts, Event scenario and ER equipment, follow-up visit.
